I still don't know how this happened - been scratching my head for hours on this one...It seems my fuel tank developed a hole this afternoon while coming home from downtown. Didn't run over anything in the road that I know of - today was a "spirited driving" day since I had to make it across town before the courthouse closed....yadayada whatever - I'll spare the circumstantial details...
Anyway, I get home and I hear liquid dropping onto the driveway - thought it was the A/C doing it's thing for a minute then I smelled it - GAS! Found an old blanket in the garage and almost immediately looked for the culprit which I first thought was a hose than came off of the tank - turns out it seems the tank buckled FROM THE INSIDE. Whatever happened pushed the tank and heat shield into the exhaust pipe. I'm guessing then the exhaust pipe rubbed against the heat shield which in turn rubbed a hole in the tank

Yeah, I'm lost too...
Ordered a new tank today but when I get the stock one down I will show pics - this is very strange - it almost looks like the tank "blew a bubble" . The metal is creased and holed - maybe someone has had this happen before?
Only theory I have is that a full tank (18.5gallons) of gas weighs between 111 and 129.5 lbs. With the stiffer rate springs I have on the car, it would rebound quicker over a dip in the road which could momentarily put a lot of pressure on the bottom of the tank causing it to buckle from the inside - more on this when it comes off of the car (maybe tomorrow?)
