3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have owned my 94 Camry with a 5SFE engine for 4 years. It has 282K miles on the engne. The engine runs smooth and the auto transmission works great too(had a trans rebuilt 4 years ago). I wondered when I will see that the engine quits, 300k or 400k miles?
to be honest, as long as you want. for the most part by 300K most if not all have rebuilt/replaced either the tranny or engine. if youve done it eariler then that then it can last past 300K. if you keep fixing it and taking care of it, your camry will fall apart around the powerplant and drive train.
What would you expect to "quit"? I guess I've never really thought about what wears out first, and so badly it's not worth fixing? The piston rings maybe?
No one knows when a vehicle will "go." 300,000 miles to me anyways is not to bad. I expect to get that from my 98 Camry. I only have 90,000 miles on it now and do/plan to make sure maintenance is performed. Keep taking care of it and it will take care of you.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. Currently have 299,650 on my 98 ES300 V6 original engine and transmission. Used Mobil 1 from about 70K miles and changed every 7000 - 7500 miles. Currently needs a new rear engine mount, Valve cover gaskets as they are leaking, Timing Belt & water pump and some oil seals. Otherwise the car functions great. I really think these engines can last a long time as long as you don't abuse it by racing or jack rabbit starts/stops and follow the routine scheduled maintenance. I never imagined I would drive this car for so long but it's really hard to let it go as it has been a very reliable car that is fairly easy to work on for a weekend DIYer.
I JUST saw a 5S-FE with 319K miles in the junkyard, and it was there because it's rear end was ripped off... We have a member, I don't know if he's still around, but last I know he had ~320 K miles on his 1MZ-FE.

i meant the engine needs a rebuilt. I talked with a mechanic and was told it costs a lot less to just replace the engine than to rebuild. I hope my original engine can go 350k before it quits.
My 96 w/5SFE just clocked in 174K, and still runs great. My 98 Sienna w/1MZFE just clocked in 210K, and runs like new! Of course both have been very well maintained.
