Vibration after installation of engine mounts

I am experiencing excessive vibration after having a new front motor mount installed on my 2001 4 cylinder Camry. I took it back to the shop and was told that the vibration was normal for a car of this age. I had the rear mount and the dogbone replaced but the vibration continues. It actually vibrates more than it did with a broken mount. I'm suspecting that the bolts may not be torqued properly or are misaligned. I'm pretty surethe problem is the front mount.

I'd appreciate the torque specs and any other suggestions.

No, it's not normal. Maybe they used the wrong mount (solid rubber instead of hydraulic)?

Do you have the part number they used?

I looked under Anchor and Beck Arnley and didn't see that number except for an Anchor Honda transmission mount.

But does the front mount (auto) look like:
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=475261
and manual mount:
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=475304

Usually with a new mount the idle vibration smooths out. It doesn't sound like the shop is standing behind its work. The mounts, besides accessibility, isn't hard to change. Maybe find a mechanically inclined friend and do some looking yourselves.

Post pictures of the front mount and dog bone areas.

Thanks for your responses. The problem has been solved. I took the car into a different shop and had them look at it.

JohnGD was correct. The front mount was not Toyota OEM as I had been told. Neither were the other mounts. In addition to that, a broken transmission mount was overlooked. I had the new shop replace all four mounts with Toyota parts. The car is so smooth now I can barely tell that it's running. The first shop was extremely apologetic and offered a full refund for all parts and labor.

Lesson learned, Don't let the brake and tire guy do my engine mounts. Apparently there's a wrong way to do everything.

Sorry to dig up an old topic, but thanks for posting your resolution.

I just had a shop look over the mounts in my '93 because I had the vibration issue as well. They replaced a torn dogbone mount and when I got the car back, the vibration was worse than before... I'll check my receipt tonight, but I would be very surprised if they used OEM parts.

Thanks.

It's more than just the "dog bone". Also check the front and rear main engine mounts. The transmission mount can be changed very easily if have a floor jack. The front you need to make room by removing the radiator fans but still doable if you are mechanically inclined.

It's already done here but most shops don't use OEM. But you can order them online or get them from TN sponsors at a discount.

Brian,
It was also pointed out to me that the first shop I went to may have ruined the existing engine mounts by not loosening them sufficiently before jacking up the engine. The shop that installed the mounts correctly used an engine lift rather than a jack underneath. Hopefully you will find this additional information useful.

The geniuses at Jiffy lube failed my safety inspection because the rubber was cracking on my dogbone mount. So in a hurry I picked up a replacement(Anchor 8200) and swapped it. I followed the instructions in the manual to tighten the 3 bolts from back to front and then torque them (47 lb-ft) front to back. But now I'm getting all kinds of engine noises & vibrations inside the car. Loud enough to be annoying.

My question is: Will the mount loosen up soon enough to make the noisiness go away?

It definitely shifts smoother but I'm missing my nice, quiet car. I'm about ready to swap it back over to the old mount and return the new one. Now that I've passed the safety.

try the generation 4 dogbone mount. It's bigger piece of rubber and lot of people said it helps with the vibration.
