99 Camry trunk+roof spray can respray?

So at some point in her life, my 99 Camry was mistreated to a really *** respray. It looked alright when I bought her, but now, 40k mi later, the paint on hood and trunk looks desperate. It is simply awful - the re-paint is mostly gone, and at some places if has peeled off completely to revel the original paint layer.

So... I was wondering, what do you all think about re-spraying them with Spray cans? I plan to start with just the trunk, and if that turns out alright, do the roof. I'm quite confident in my sanding/spray painting abilities, and the paint will run me about $50-60.

My main concern: how long will it last?

Local paint shop quoted me around $1000 for trunk-roof-hood (my hood is also a victim, but that's another story), and I quite frankly don't want to spend that kind of dough on it at this point in time.

I recently sanded and resprayed my rear, and top-half of front bumpers with Dupli-Color. 3-4 coats of "Toyota Original" 1B2paint, followed by 2-3 coats of clear coat. It looks much, much better now. Looks very good, to be honest.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

TL;DR: Paint on roof and trunk is gone. Will rattle cans suffice?

With enough prep anything is possible. Dont spray outside. And cover the whole car up b/c you will get over spray everywhere.

Longevity is directly related with prep. Sand well, wash with dish detergent/ degreaser. Prime, sand, paint, sand, paint, sand. Thin coats are key.

Id say go for it. Even if it only last another 50k. That means for $120 tops youll get at least 100k. Dont waste that kinda money especially if you are confident in your skills. There also a level of self fulfillment when you do something yourself. I spray canned a lot of my car (front bumper and whole kit) And to this point I didnt even bother with clear but my car is like 18 years old and has very little shine left anymore. GL whatever you decide.

Those dupli-color paints work well. With the right prep work, it will look great if you're patient and diligent.

You can check out 1 day paint. They offer special prices for just body panel painting.

I guess it is worth doing. I mean, no matter what I do, it cannot possibly turn out looking worse than it does now. And, $60-70 is not a huge amount of money, so time to order the paint, I suppose.

That's an interesting point. I thought longevity depended heavily on the type of paint.

Granted I will clearcoat mine, but how long did yours last before "needing attention" again?

Checked them out, but their prices are, again, a bit out of my reach. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

The front fender I did, with black primer and nice clearcoat, looks really good. My main concern is how long it will keep looking that way.

I haven't needed any attention yet. The front bumper has been done for at least 8-10 months. The kit was just done recently. I used a semi gloss made for plastics. White will likely hold up longer than most other colors due to its reflective properties. Most darker colors will attract more sun light thus causing more fading over time.
Although my first car I ever had (Saturn sl1) had a rattle can paint job (Rustoleum) flat black and it looked great for over 2 years till it met its demise. (Tree) fwd drifting is not a good idea... Wish I had pics of that car. Anyone ever seen an early 90s Saturn sl1 with a full body kit.
