Well are you looking for a used engine,, rebuild, or brand new?

used = junkyard
rebuild = local engine places / NAPA / carquest, etc.
brand new = ...really don't bother

You can find used for a couple hundred, probably around 600-800 for V6. Shipping will be the killer, but wouldn't be terrible if shipped freight ( which is really the only choice) should be about $200 for shipping.

As in, "oil level got so low I threw a rod through the block", or just "she's leaking oil faster than I can pour it in"?

The first ain't real fixable, but the second would be way cheaper to fix than a new engine.

wow, as someone who does a lot of driving with oil leaks I know how that sucks. It's like I'm constantly checking under the hood every 300 or 400 miles depending on conditions. If I'm revving 4 or 5,000 rpm every few miles to get over a pass I can burn up half a quart within like 150 miles or so. And that's with high mileage oil. Regular oil would probably evaporate.

There was a guy in my complex who said, "you're always working on that old thing". I wanted to say shut the hell up. There's a reason why I'm always popping the hood!

There was 1 time I drove over 600 miles in a day without checking the oil. Next morning I checked and the dipstick was dry. Was scared to start the car but only needed like 1.5 quarts. Which is still pretty low.

$1,700 sounds a bit high. i can bet there is someone who can get a working engine from a salvage yard (which are very cheap, like 100 bucks or so) and then do it. Try to go to a small, crappy looking mechanic shop who's willing to do it for less. Or just call around to places in the phone book that don't have fancy pictures of 2011 Camrys and stuff.

My car was in an accident and 3 places quoted $2,000. I got a reference from a guy who worked at a Toyota salvage yard who fixed the damage for $640.

how many miles are on your 19-year-old camry? honestly, probably will be cheaper in the long run to find a 'new' car. you can probably find a gen3 camry with a good engine for less money than buying an unknown condition used engine and paying someone to install it. most salvage yards do offer some sort of warranty, but the mechanic installing that would need to get paid for any and work. you would be so far at a loss if that used engine turned out to be bad after installing.
