3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Long time no see TN, have a problem and hope someone here can help me.
Car is a 96 Camry LE with a 1MZ-FE engine with 102k miles on it. I recently had two large changes done on it - both CV joints had their boots replaced within 500 miles/2 weeks within each other (I just replaced my left ones yesterday), as well as a timing belt replacement with the previous CV boot exchange.
Now I did most of the work for the boot replacements, but I wasn't home for part of the right CV boot replacement weekend, so my dad did the entire timing belt change. I believe he also changed the power steering pump belt as well as the alternator belt.
Anyways, the problem: after changing the right CV boot, I noticed that while turning to the extreme (i.e. when the steering wheel locks to both the left and right side), the right side of the engine compartment makes an unbearable squealing noise. This continues until the wheel leaves the extreme left or right side (even just by 1 cm of turning difference) - no noise comes out during regular, non-extreme turning. The problem persists even when the vehicle is not moving.
Researching the problem led to a few finds, most dealing with the power steering. Some issues come up are either too tight/too loose power steering pump belt, dying power steering pump or possibly a damaged/worn wheel bearing. Now both my dad and I don't know the culprit at all - we've heard similar situations for other cars on the road, but we don't know what's causing it.
Anyone here know what's causing the sound? Any suggestions are welcome (if you need more info I'd be willing to provide it), as I'd like to solve this ASAP.

Thank you for your help!
Had the exact same issue- I solved it for about 2 years by just not turning the wheel that far, then I finally got sick of it, replaced the PS pump belt (It couldn't be tightened any more), and now it works fine. My guess is the belt is too loose.
Until proven otherwise, it's the power steering belt slipping. If the belt's new, tighten 'er up a bit. If the belt's old, replace it (don't waste time with "belt dressing" -- new PS belts are cheap.
Have the same issue on my 99 Camry 2.2 4cyl. Been there for a while, but I almost never turn to the extreme, and it doesn't always squeak when I do, so I just let it be.
But, by the sound of it, it does seem like a belt is slipping. This could be a semi-common problem on Camrys, as I've heard it on a few cars.
Just got back from working on it - it was the belt, I tightened it a bit and the noise is 80% gone (when heard with the engine hood open it seems like there's a scraping noise, but the noise is gone completely inside the cabin). There's the possibility of the PS pump starting to give, so I might just go ahead and look for one of those (not in a rush). Though if anyone has any suggestions where to find a cheap one, I'd be grateful.
