wood grain trim replacement, torn console covercover

Howdy Folks,

I just picked up a '96 Camry and am highly impressed with it. My original intention was to use it for a daily driver/beater but after a little driving I think it deserves more respect. First order of business for me is that the wood grain interior trim is discolored and delaminating. Its got a Toyota logo so I guess its OEM stuff. I want to replace it but its still stuck on pretty good in alot of places. Any tricks to softening up the adhesive? I was thinking maybe a blow dryer. I think a heat gun may be too hard on the plastic trim beneath the thin trim I want to remove. Any recommendations for a quailty aftermarket wood trim kit?

Also the console cover armrest pad is torn. Is a factory replacement available? Or even better, an aftermarket replacement with decent cup holders?

Thanks for any input,

-BunnMan

The trim comes off ez, the 3M tape residue is more of a chore to remove. I used a Hair Dryer to heat it up and, wore a Mechanics glove to rub it off. Kept me from burning my fingers.

It's easier to work with if you remove the trim bezel pieces from the dash. Same rule applies when installing the new trim.

Helpful thread below if you haven't found it yet.

You can take you console lid to an upholster and have it recovered, or pick a good one up from a junk yard.

if you want to remove it faster, use a heat gun - gets much hotter than a hair dryer. cant even count the number of times ive used it. certainly a worth-while investment.

Thanks for the quick replies folks. I saw the thread you linked eyeball and while it has tons of wonderfully helpful and informative info...there wasn't anything much on the wood grain and console cover campaign. Did find one console cover thread in there that identified which cover accompanied which trim level.

I may make the trip (or ship) to the upholsterer for the console cover. Was kinda hoping some aftermarket manufacturer offered something with more functional cup holders. I'm gonna be doing alot of road trips in this thing and I see the stock holders spilling alotta coffee!!! lol

i think the wood grain was a dealer add-on and not standard with a trim line. my camry LE is the 'gold package' (gold emblems on the trunk) and had the wood grain but it looked horrifically fake so i removed all except the large part around the instrument cluster and HVAC controls.

Can anybody recommend a good wood trim manufacturer to buy to replace it?

This one has the gold on the trunk too, though the "CAMRY" letters are gone in the middle leaving only the grey adhesive that still says "CAMRY" lol. I'd like to find the letters to fix that too.
