3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have searched this forum and the net and have seen alot of opinions but not facts from people who have actually installed CAI's. I have a 1998 Camry with a 5S-FE and am considering purchasing and installing one. Never mind my reasons, I just want to hear from people who have done it. What problems have you had? What brand did you install? Did you take it back out because of MPG? Thanks all!
you will absolutly loose MPG after a CAI install. but NOT for any technical reason. your gonna love teh sound it provides and find yourself going into higher RPMs and heavier throttle then before. I promise!
just FYI...youll have to build one for a 5sfe, they dont make one, at least not that I've seen in the past years.
I agree with Bigbird, you will lose mpg on a CAI, because you will step on the gas more to hear "cool" engine sounds while your driving around, even just normally. That is assuming you are kind of a perfomance enthusiast.

Yeah Brandon you should see Sk8ersublime's car, I have.
It's absolutely Cherry!
yea.....ive let it go to hell a bit...I havent washed it in like a year....and a tiny piece of plastic broke off the center console now when ever I bump it, the ring around the shifter pops up.....My rear door sensors do not work, and I have no trunk light anymore as my hockey gear ripped the Cathodes down one day :\...oh and i hate my stereo.
I was gonna detail it yesterday, but after doing the wife's gen4, which took like 5 hours, I didnt want to think about cleaning again. I bought all of the stuff tho, so perhaps next weekend, especially if I can make it to the meet in 2/3 weeks.
I don't think you have any change in fuel economy. If anything a little more gas mileage because there Isnt as much air restriction?
You're right about not being able to see any change but the valves are still gonna be the greatest restriction when not at WOT so that won't matter either. Technically there might be a imperceptible decrease because cool air has less energy by definition, so the difference between the pressure of the crankcase and the expanding piston would be imperceptibly greater, but either way it's nothing.
On a side note, that's one advantage of EGR. Letting something besides air into the cylinder reduces the difference in pressure between it after the valve has closed and the crankcase, so the engine doesn't have to do as much work against the rotating as the pressure in the cylinder drops when moving down after the valve has closed. A big disadvantage is knock, so that's why manufacturers are moving towards cooled EGR. It allows more gas into the cylinder w/o a risk of knocking and that reduces part throttle pumping losses.
