95 No Start when cold - NSS?

Hi guys,

My fiance's 95 sometimes doesn't start. Turn the key, *click*, no turnover. Move the shifter to drive, then back to park and it usually starts right up.

Is this a clear indication for a NSS cleaning?

Ironically, it's never not start for me...only her

Thanks,
Mike

Is it necessary to play with the shifter, or can it be started with enough retries with the key? If so, I'd say the solenoid contacts in the starter need to be changed out. Easy fix.

If tweeking the shifter is required, then, yeah, I'd say the NSS is needing some TLC.

Cool, thank you. I may just do both as preventative maintenance. My light on the dash for 'Drive' doesnt light up. which also seems to be a NSS indicator. It has never lit up since 100k ago when i bought the car.

Ur Nss probably needs cleaned.

Next time ur girl can't get it to start tell her to put it in neutral and try it.

Could be the contacts on the starter as well. If u can get it to do it hop out and tap the solenoid on the starter and see if it cranks over afterwards.

Check out the stickies for both diy

Your "D" light doesn't light up because those things nearly always burn out in Camrys after 10 years or so. Easy to replace -- see the DIY: DIY: Gen 3 "D" Bulb replacement

There are also some good DIYs for replacing the starter contacts and cleaning the NSS. See Starter Solenoid Contacts Replacement DIY (2000 I4) and DIY: Neutral Safety Switch Cleaning .
