DIY: Gen4 Key Ignition Light

Even as simple as this DIY may be, I see a few topics about this with little to no help

Tools necessary:

Flat head screwdriver
Philips screwdriver
#74 bulb

Where the area is circled red, you may notice a little area where your flathead can fit in nicely. Using the flathead, insert it and just pry out. You will need to use a little bit of force. The molding should just pop out and then you can place it elsewhere.

You may bend a metal clip while prying out like me. Here is where the two clips are on the molding.

After that, remove the screw circled in red

After that, the clear piece just comes right out. You will see the green covered bulb (circled red). Twist to your right to detach the bulb housing from the clear piece.

After that you can replace it with a #74 bulb.

If you happen to break or bend the metal clip like me, the part # is 90468-04177.

Part # for factory bulb: 90981-11014
Part # for green bulb cap: 84998-10070

for reference: 90981-11014 bulb part #,14V 1.4W
84998-10070 green cap part # (they don't come together)

also sidenote: its not necessary to take the trim off, you can either take the radio out and reach to the left and you can twist the bulb out or if you look from underneath you can see the single black wire running to it and unscrew from there too, I'll take pics tomorrow of it from underneath

Ah I didn't realize you can just reach under..might be a little tricky.

Since I broke my clip, I asked TOYOTAPARTSMAN for the part #:

90468-04177

If anyone else bends or breaks this metal clip. It's about $.63 at my dealership. So no big deal lol.

I thought you just pull the bulb out instead of twisting the whole thing out.

If you got small fingers go for it :P doesn't hurt to just twist the base out.

That's a cool DIY !

However, What if I wanted to go a little further and remove the Ignition Switch ?

Jimbo
1. Disconnect negative battery terminal…..wait 90 seconds for SRS system.

2. Remove steering column cover - 5 screws from the bottom.

3. Disconnect cable connector under steering column area.

4. Remove 1" x 2" cover under ignition switch…this gives you access to the cotter pin which releases the ignition switch.

5. Remove ignition switch rim cover (black 1.5" diameter circular washer like piece) by gently prying it off.

6. Remove clear plastic casing cover by gently prying up the 2 plastic tabs (really small and black)

7. Insert Key into ignition switch and turn to ACC.

8. Now the tough part … look at the replacement part, estimate about how far the pin is from the edge of the ignition switch and insert an ice pick or something like it to depress the cotter pin….if you press it right, not too hard, it will jiggle the ignition switch free and you can remove it by pulling the key and ignition switch out. I stuck my left hand into the area from the steering wheel opening, then guide the ice pick coming up the 1x2" opening to where you feel a little cotter pin hole.

9. Now insert the new ignition switch and enjoy!

I replaced mine today. Needed to since the bulb was blown. Looks very bright, got the same LEDs as the one I have installed in my HVACs, which are super bright.

Much better than that ugly green.

On the Australian spec'ed SXV20, there is no light at all. Is there a way to retro fit a small light so that I can actually see the ignition in the dark?

Does anyone know the part numbers for the illuminated bezel? And whether it will fit on an Australian made SXV20.

Oooh, that's a bit tough to figure out for us NA Camry owners. Maybe if you show us how it looks like taken apart we can help you out further?

Take a picture of the ignition area, I'm sure you can do a little trimming to add in the bezel + led.

Ask Toyotapartsman for the part #, he will probably tell you it and the price.
