3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Grandma is buying a new car and giving her 1998 Camry to my High School Daughter. the car is mint, 110k, Grnadma bought it new and it has been babied and impecably maintained. I thought I would say hello and hang out on this forum a litle and get familiar with the Camry . I am a Forum veteran and an OK backyard Mechanic.......I am going through the rcordsa and it apears the timing belt and water pump were replaced within the last 3-5 years and 30k-50k miles. I believe these are non-interference engines right?

Thanks for the info......I looked though the service records again it looks like the waterpump and timing belt was replaced at 80k in 2006 and then the belt was replaced again at 99k in 2007/2008. I should be all set with the TB for a while......

Not sure why the tb was changed within <20k miles. I've run my camry 93k with stock tb and there are tn members who ran their tbs close or past 200k. Please check/verify why the belt was replaces with 20 k miles on it. Prolly, they didn't replace wter pump, pulleys etc on their first tb change?

I think what happened is Grandpa is a little forgetful but also very anal and when he bought the car they told him to get the timing belt changed. I think this just stuck with him and he would get the TB changed more than it needed. I think he had the a leaking waterpump and TB changed in 03 at about 58K. it might have even been under warranty. He bought an extended warranty... I am trying to put the service records together.......I think he had the tranny flushed 4 times with T4( every 30k miles). and he had the oil changed faithfully every 3,500 miles......my high school daughter is oblivious to the fact that she is getting a nice well maintained car......I will not have the car for a few weeks.......just getting a headstart on figuring out what I have......thanks for the feedback

WOW, what a lucky young lady! She is getting one of the best cars ever made, that has been well taken care of, and that you can help her maintain/repair so that it will last for another 20 years. I have learned that I have to stay on top of things with my daughters (now 20 and 18), as they are not going to just "notice" something wrong/different and let me know (haha). It is always good to be able to keep a real gem like this in the family. God Bless.
Great first car for a high school teenager. I don't get why parents need to spend oblivious amount of money on a new car for their teen's first car. I always facepalm whenever I see a high school kid driving a new BMW/M-Benz/Lexus. Why?
Yess!! this is by far.. my most favorite mod!.. when you take a young person and make them drive a gen3/gen4 camry! .. i remember when i got mines, i was like- " I HAVE NO CHANCES OF BEING COOL NOW!" but.. it wasn't too bad. I love mines, and i'm sure she'll love hers.
Your Camry sounds excessively pampered. 30K tranny flushes? 2 timing belts in 20,000 miles? With such good care, it probably won't be able to adapt to the abuse of a high school student
I should be getting the car in a few weeks I wil post up some pics then!!

i second the motion for PICS!
I think she will like it. I had bought her a 1998 saab 900S but she would not drive it because it was a statndard. She said "I am thrilled to get an automatic, even if it is puke green"

Lucky girl! She will love the gas mileage! I have a 98 I purchased that had 94K on it and the T/B had been replaced at 65K. Love the car and love the fact that I can go between fill ups much longer than alot of my friends.
It's unusual having to replace the timing belt so quickly. They probably didn't some something right the first time.
T-IV is not the correct ATF for this tranny. But it doesn't look like there is a problem at this mileage. The dealer probably left the differential fluid alone, so that should be checked/replaced. Mobil-1, Castrol Import Multi-vehicle ATF or Walmart SuperTech Mercon-V are good alternatives to dino Dexron III. I'd do a PS fluid flush too: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t19334.html
Also check the valve cover gasket. It likes to leak oil on the firewall side where people won't see. If it needs to be changed I'd reseal the semi-circular plugs and the distributor plug (that's what Toyota did when they switched over to coils).
