3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Most of the people on here who have seen my car in person are well aware that my car has some paint issues So anyways, I've been resolved for some time now to fix it, it's just been a matter of getting the car to the body shop and fixing them. Most of this body work is pretty labor intensive in itself, and add to it that I'm using OEM Toyota paint, and you'll understand why I'm paying 1000$ for all of this. I'll be getting both fenders, the hood, and the driver side door painted, as well as blending where appropriate.
The work is being done by a local shop who agreed to be very generous on the labour for me The car will be getting dropped off tomorrow at 6 PM, and I'll be taking my second car, the RL, to Montreal on Saturday, and I'll be picking up the Camry on my return on the 11th of July.
Anyways, on to the pics! I'm completely convince this was a factory defect from TMM at the paint application booth since many high mileage T vins I've seen developed similar hood issues. And what is odd is the ones I've seen with similar paint issues on the hood where exclusively produced in a 3 month window from April to June of '95 That's all empirical of course and in no way scientific
The 3 issues on the passenger side fender, exclusive to my car, age related issues, contained to this panel only:
What my hood looks like, I'm completely conviced this is a factory defect in the paint booth at TMM, since I've been VERY, VERY good to my paint!
It's starting to happen to the tip of the fender as well:
The drivers door imperfection. Getting completely repaired. This is just stupidity:
Now, that being said, I've been told about clear bras. Does anyone have anything to chip in about those? Good? Bad? I'll be posting pics as soon as I pick up the car on the 11th

Wow.. your camry's paint is pretty wrecked. Couldn't tell at all from your wash and wax pics which made it look spankin new. Guess pictures can really lie lol. That's what I wonder about many camry's on here. My camry looks pretty new actually, with only a few problems here and there. Most cameras wouldn't pick it up unless I pointed it out, which makes me glad my camry's in such good condition that it looks good in person also.
Sucks that you gotta pay that much for OEM paint though. and I vote also for the clear bra, you'll be glad you didn't skimp out on it especially after getting a fresh paint job.

Go 3M clear bra...like i said before, i wish i had of at the time.
As Justin pointed out, it does look much worst in the pictures I chose the worst sections of what is getting repainted to demonstrate why I'm doing it The rest of the car is impecable though. You have to remember Isaac, this car has been thru numerous 9 hours drives where the engine ran for 9 hours straight no break. That puts what I believe to have been an already weak paint from the factory under even more stress.
I honestly believe this was a factory defect in the paint. I really started in 2005 when I inherited the car, and only got really bad about 2.5 years ago...
The camera can be both your worst enemy and your greatest ally. In this case, I chose hi-res, closeup, high illumination shots of the worst segments to prove a point
Since we are talking about clearbra's, do you guys know how much they run??

Dude....a grand for that much work AND oem paint is unheard of. I doubt you could get a decent paint job with regular paint for that price around here...
You can get universal clearbra's on eBay from a company called rVinyl for relatively cheap. I've used this company twice now and they've got some quality materials and great prices!

Very true. The hood is gettin stripped to the bare metal, and then there is the R&I work, which is a pain I am VERY lucky as far as the price goes. And the beauty is shop is willing to stand behind the work as long as I own the car.

Cool! Thanks for the heads up on that one! Do you know how long I should leave the paint untouched once I get it back? I'm going to do 3 months of just wash/dry with a mild detergent, a soft sponge and soft cloth. Too long or too short?

Nice. As far as waiting for the paint, I've heard different things. Some people say a few weeks, but I've also heard as long as 6 months...I would ask the paint shop that's doing it since they stand behind their work.
God damn, all that work for a grand? My hood and bumper with non-OEM paint cost me $550...and hell the hood is only half decent.
I got mine done in December, and once I got it, I didn't touch it with ANYTHING, no soap no water. After those 90 days I washed with turtle wax brand soap and waxed with some armor all wax.
It's best to ask the shop but I'd say wait at least 90 days.
And thanks to Crash, I'm now looking into that cheap rVyinyl hood protector...compared to $80 for 3M...should be pretty nice for $15...I already got a chip on my hood too I need to fix.
holy crap ameer i was sure your car was mint from the waxing pics you kept posting lol
good price man!cant wait to see the outcome! i'm myself thinking about repainting the whole car myself... i bough a used binks spray gun for 15 bucks LOLOLOL

I'll ask the shop to be sure I talked to my parents about rVinyl and I just ordered enough for 4 cars

anyway you in montreal?
Haha, yeah Simon, the hood is pretty bad, but I also took pictures of the worst parts. Notice how I never took close up pictures around the hood area But yeah, the rest of the car is great, just the hood and the passenger fender. The bottom part of the door really needs to be pointed out but it bothers me
Cool! But make sure you practice before! I've been told how well you prep the car will affect the final outcome of the paint. I'm in Montreal until Sunday I'm in the west island (St-Charles & Antoine Faucon, north of the 40) Let me know if you plan on dropping by that area!

Sorry for the late update, I picked up the car from the shop yesterday, but I was exhausted. Home improvement, 10 hours of driving followed by only 3 hours of sleep and a full workday can do that to you So anyways, paint looks super shiny, just the way I like it I realized I'm an idiot for not painting the bumper But I'll talk to the shop next week about painting the bumper since they did have some leftover paint. Anyways, here are the pics! Pearl paint is beautiful!
