Help With Horn?

Hey my friend's Camrys horn recently stopped working, and we are not sure how to fix it. It is actually a 91' if that makes any difference, and I've only got some limited experience working on my Gen 3. Anyway, there are 2 horns each with connected with one wire. We bought a replacement horn from autozone that was slightly larger but also said it was 12 volt. We connected it, but had no luck getting any sound from it.

Any ideas what's wrong? The fuses are fine, and I think the wiring is fine because when we press it the old horns made a weird clicking noise when we let pressure off the steering wheel horn button. There is also a lot of rattling stuff inside the old horns that we aren't sure how to take apart.

I realize that his car is a 91' LE but, this forum seems more active, and you guys have been great helping me with my 96'.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Nathan

What you need to do is first confirm that you have voltage going to the steering wheel. There will be 2 wires connected to the horn. One of them will be 12V+ from the fuse panel and the other wire runs from the steering wheel to the horn itself.

Probe the wiring to the horn, and use a multimeter and first confirm voltage. Once you confirm that you have 12V to the steering wheel, unplug the horn connector and probe the connection with your multimeter. (Note: If you do not have voltage to the steering wheel, the fuse is blown .. or the wiring is damaged somehow) Press and hold the horn inside the car, and confirm you have 12V to the connector. If you do not, the wiring between the steering wheel and the connector is damaged at some point. If you do have voltage, make sure that the horn is properly grounded at the body.

If all is good, you may possibly have a bad horn out of the box..

What you can do to test it is to hook the horn directly to the battery.. Hook a wire from the Positive terminal to where the connector plugs in, and hook another wire to a bolt on the horn (where it mounts to the car). the horn should immediately sound. If not, the horn is faulty and should be replaced.

Hope that helps!
