Headliner adhesive/glue

I took the headliner out of a 1999 Camry to recover. I purchased some cotton fabric to cover it with, and used 3M Super 77 spray adhesive.

It looked great when I reinstalled it, but now the fabric is pulling down at the corners and in the middle after baking in the sun all day.

Is there a better adhesive? From what I have read about Super 90, it isn't much stronger.

Thanks for the help!

I did mine on a 99 too. I tried spray adhesive but even before putting it all back together it did not seem to stick too well. So I bought some glue called 'multigrip' which is a thick gel - used 500ml to do the job. I also cut the cloth larger than the backing board and wrapped it around the edges by about 2 inches all the way around. Mine has been fine for about a year including our summer - western NSW in Australia - so it is burning in the sun. The middle should be held up by the interior light as well as the glue.

To do the job well I had to take the roof liner out of the car alltogether - the first job was to rip off the factory fabric and then scrub all of the foam off the liner board. The factory cloth is stuck to a layer of foam which is stuck to the liner board - the foam decays and usually (in the 3 i have seen) it is the foam layer falling apart that lets the cloth fall down - its not the glue letting go.

It sounds like you tried to do the job in the car which I suspect is impossible to do properly, you might have to take all the trim off, light out, front window shades out and I found that removing the rear seat base made it easier to get the liner board out through without bending it too much.

Thanks for your reply. I did take the whole thing out, but stretched the fabric, which then popped off the headliner.

I bought sole weldbond, which I think is the same stuff. Its water soluble, but dries clear. Did you have any problems with bleed through?

I didn't stretch the fabric at all. I bought different cloth - a quite heavy cotton upholstrey fabric - and it is black - almost so there is no visable glue - I don't think any came through the thick cloth.

I put the glue on the board and let it sit for a few minutes (which my glue said to do) before putting the fabric on. This meant the glue was more tacky - less runny when the cloth went on.
