Timing belt noise

I had a timing belt , water pump, tensioner replacement done on my 2001 toyota camry 4cyl and the engine now has a whining sound when the rpms are increased from idle. This noise was not there before the replacement and i was wondering if anyone has any suggestions. The dealer said this noise should go away in time???? This is my second timing belt replacement and I do not remember this noise after the last replacement.

I guess as long as the dealer will guarantee that noise will go away. I've never had Squeek on both my cars 4/6 cyl's.

i had my 93 camry 4cyl timing belt change at toyota stealership back in 2003 around 190k, and heard the whining noise afterward, the noise increase as the engine rpm increase, then after i drove for a few months, the noise is less noticable. 3 or 4 year later at 250k, my timing belt was due again after 60k miles, this time i changed myself, and i found my lower timing belt cover lip was shaved, my guess was the "professional trained toyota technician" at stealership did a lousy timing belt job. and forgot to tigen the timing belt cover screw, the accessory belt was grinding the timing belt cover off. it didn't affect the functionality of my car, but i was disappointed at paying premium service for this kind of work.

I had this same noise on my wagon right after the timing belt change and it went away within probably the first thousand miles of driving.

Thanks for the reply. i have driven the car about 1200 miles since the belt change and the noise is still the same...no more, no less. i will schedule a appointment with the dealer to check it out again because they never really looked at it, just listened to the noise. I just do not want to stuck somewhere with engine damage.

It's not normal for a timing belt to make noise after a replacement. Some other component in there is worn out and making the noise. I don't know the 4cyl's that well, but an idler pulley could be worn, or the new tensioner could be faulty. In a proper repair, you shouldn't hear any crappy noise from that part of the engine, period.

Edit: been there done that, twice to get it fixed right, on two cars.

The engine should generally be quieter and even feel more powerful after a proper timing belt job. So the dealer messed up on the timing belt job. Have a word with the manager that the noise appears after they worked on it. Seems like dealers have a lot of incompetent techs these days.

I had the same problem. I changed the timing belt on my 1995 4 cyl. And it had a whining sound also. The noise went away in a couple of days. About a year later the new water pump which was replace at the same time as the timing belt started to leak. When I removed the timing belt covers, I found shavings from the timing belt inside and the edges of the belt were worn. I could not find out where the timing belt was rubbing on. The crank washer was install the right way, both pulleys are new, it was centered on the water pump pulley OK and the belt cleared the covers. When I replaced the water pump, I also replaced the timing belt just in case. There was no whining noise this time around. Never did find out why the first one was noisy.
