3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
So I was driving along I-70 East today heading out to Baltimore to meet up with a few of the local TN guys. Just detailed the car, it was looking good, weather was awesome too so it was a good drive.
Then....
My AC stops blowing and all my gauges go to zero. WTF!?
The engine is running still, I am able to steer. I give the car a little gas, and the engine just revs, no power. SHIT!
I hit the hazard lights and get to the shoulder right away, turn the car off and pop the hood.
Under the hood I see just a tiny bit of smoke, only for a second and I smell burnt rubber. I look around, and i noticed on the pulleys around the belt I see this material that looks like the inside of an etch-a-sketch all over the pulley. also a bit was on the High pressure line for the P/S. Later I touched the stuff on the P/S line and it came right now, but it was like a melted plastic that just crumbled away. I have no idea.
Anyway, 38 miles towed the car is at the dealer the car was brought from and has been serviced at multiple times. They are gonna let me know what is up on Monday. 3 possibilities as of now at least from symptom
1) Belt is fucked everything else is ok (maybe bad alt., they replace the belt and alt. Car lives.
2) Belt is fucked, car overheated, heads warped. FUCKED.
3) Timing belt fucked, car fucked.
other possibilities? just sharing my issue and seeing if anyone else has had a similar thing happen
Oh and all of the nasty stuff in the engine bay is from when my P/S pump exploded a few years ago, it was never cleaned out and everything is all nasty down there....maybe I can have them clean my engine bay if the car isnt that bad...
belts look ok, might have broke a tbelt. Does it just crank faster then normal when you try to restart, and it doesn't catch. If so, it's a tbelt. Good news though if this is the case. These are non interference engines.
So you just reset the timing and throw a new belt on and you're good to go.

Yes, engine is a non-interference engine, so it will be fine if the timing belt is broken. I hardly doubt a warped head just cause you didn't see a lot of smoke and my guess is you didn't see the temp gauge soar. Also, to check, look at the inside of the crankcase, oil cap, or tail pipe to see if there is any milky residue. If there is, then that means oil and coolant are mixing.

Thats good to know! Thanks to the both of you. Ive always heard that timing belts destroy the engine if they break, didnt know there were different types. The people at toyota were telling me that if the time belt is snapped then it will prolly need a new engine...hopefully the tech who checks it tomorrow knows what the hell is is talking about and they dont try to screw me, otherwise if they say the Tbelt is the problem ill have to argue with them.
I dont think it overheated, I couldnt check the gauge tho, I was going 70-80mph when the everything died, all my gauges went out, so i was just concerned with getting off of the road as quick as I could.
So the engine was still running when you pulled to the side of the road?... But there was no power being transmitted to move the car? That doesn't sound like a T-belt problem. More likely a transmission problem.

If engine was still running, it wasn't your timing belt. Best guess would be something fried on the harness down to the tranny. Not sure how the heck that could happen, 'tho. Prognosis would depend on what caused the fry, and how much got taken out when it went. If the engine was running, I think that would mean your ECU came out intact, which is good.

Makes sense....it was weird to me too. The engine seemed to be running fine, but everything turned off, when I accelerated the engine rev'd and I got just a little bit of power.
But then when I turned off the car, It would not start again. It would crank, then start for a sec, I could hear a squeal then it would die.
Now, the only thing I did recently was put my HIDs back in about a week ago. you think the ballast could have fried something, even though they have been work fine for months before and for the last week or so after I put them back in?
Sounds like maybe a belt or pulley seized and maybe blew a fuse somewhere. But not sure why it wasn't transmitting power to the wheels if the engine revved (transmission flared?), because even if the transmission went into limp mode it should still be in OD. I guess we'll find out.
So I got the call today, and the car is going to live!
They said the A/C clutch locked up when caused the pulley to lock up which then shred up the belt, which is all of the material in the engine bay. $700~ to fix....340,700 miles and this is the first time the A/C ever had a problem...pretty good run i suppose....lol

Bizarre...belt looked OK in the pics. Don't understand why your tranny was effected, either.
Always another surprise...that's what makes cars and women so much fun
your car remains proof of the amazing job old toyota did with that car! glad it's ok chad!
Going off topic here, but I think Toyota could make a good advertising campaign off a lot of us on here! 340k original miles is almost unheard of with other manufacturers.

That was a different Toyota when the quality of their vehicles was top notch. Time will tell if the current Toyota will do just as well.
