'98 camry 2.2le transmission whine

Hi: brand new to toyota nation. a Jag driver by inclination. The '98 camry arrived via death of a relative a couple years back and it's my commuting car. has 93k on it, had my jag mechanic drain tranny and transaxle and refill about 1k miles ago. in recent weeks i have a whine in first and second gears, louder and more pronounced at higher rpms. seems to quiet out once it gets to 3rd on up. no performance issues, no harsh shifts, tranny performs well but the whine is at this point mildly annoying.

Anyone have thoughts on what it might be? I did an archives search but didn't see anything that jumped out to me. Thanks in advance.

Check the oil level and the type of oil used first. If those are ok, then its probably a trans bearing going bad.

What fluid did the shop use? A Dexron III type fluid?

Also check the differential fluid level. The common confusion about a separate chamber or not can lead to an empty differential, especially after a fluid change.

Thanks to both responders. I recall my mechanic asking me to look up what ATF to use, which i did. I believe it was Dexron III, not 4. I will check fluid level, and ask him to doublecheck level in the differential. The noise only appears when the tranny is hot, not on cold startup.

If tranny looks like it's headed south ... the car's out of here. it's not worth it to me to pay the labor on a major transmission job. Or without seeing an esitmate i would think anything transmission related on this car would be quite labor intensive.

Thanks again for the quick responses.

it sounds like there isnt enough fluid in there, either in the transmission or differential. i have heard countless people not realizing the differential is completely separated from the transmission.
