Brake? No. Break? Yes, not on me but seen a couple when I still turned wrenches. Water pumps seize so do tensioners and then there is just plain old age. As in when the owner says "I was supposed to replace that, when?"

The OP might be worried about internal damage.....I am pretty sure these gen 3 and 4 engines are all non interference( no internal engine damage when the belt breaks), and you just put a new belt, tensioners , WP, etc on.....I think the 4 banger is relatively simple......

Pleas try and create a nice detailed signature that will follow you around like a cute puppy dog on every post

Many years ago I had one break on my 86 Camry DX when the belt itself had only 53,000 miles on it. This is when we had 60,000 mile change intervals. Luckily I was accelerating after turning left from a stop light and I was only 1/2 mile from home. I just depressed the clutch (5 speed) and was able to coast all the way home. Tried cranking it over and knew from the increased cranking speed sound that I had snapped the belt. Confirmed it by pulling the distributor cap and watching the rotor not turn while the wife cranked it over. I think the rubber used today is of better quality than what was used in the 80's and early 90's. I believe that's why the change intervals were raised to 90,000 miles on the generation 4 cars.

Rubber is, but there is other material mixed in the with rubber so that the belt has a better chance of resisting different conditions (heat, oil, etc)

AFAIK the 3vz-fe is the only interference engine in this generation.

The 3VZ-FE is non-interference. IIRC some of the VVTI V6s were interference.

It's really a crap shoot IMO. I have ~220k on the original belt in my 92 Camry, but others will die within ~10k to ~20k miles.

The older belts were neoprene rubber, then they were switched to highly saturated nitrile rubber that handle temperature better.
