3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My engine hesitates while coasting along with my foot slight pressed on the accelerator. It doesn't hesitate when I accelerate, except when starting from 0mph. But while I'm cruising along keeping a steady speed (happens when using cruise control too), my engine continues to hesitate.
Things that have not solved the problem: I have changed spark plugs, spark plug wires, air filter, engine read out is blank, transmission is not the problem (took it to transmission guy), all liquids are at the right levels and good condition (oil, coolant, transmission, etc.)
Things I am planning on replacing to see if it works: Fuel filter.
I have also heard someone say that it may be a sensor on the engine or exhaust. I have already replaced the rear emmission sensor ($151 for a little thing no one needs).
I would change the fuel filter, then put some fuel injector cleaner like Techron in the gas tank, or you could go ahead and use seafoam in the engine oil, brake booster and in the gas tank. 1/3 of can in each place.
He's saying to put 1/3 of the can of seafoam into the intake tract by sucking it into the vacuum line that goes to the brake booster. That is: With engine running, disconnect vacuum line from booster, dip open end in can, let it suck up 1/3.

1996 Avalon XLS, ABS brakes, moonroof, white, acquired w/ 139k miles, now at 261k.
2001 Yamaha FZ1, Ivan's jet kit, resprung all around, Ohlins in the rear, Race Tech cartridge emulators in the forks, 45k miles.
I followed you with the first part (which I didn't quote). But what do you mean in what I have quoted above? Why would I do anything with my brakes?
Seeking clarification is all. Thanks.
Sorry iPhone autocorrect messes things up. I meant to say to put Seafoam treatment in the engine oil, suck the seafoam through the brake booster hose(disconnect the hose from the booster), and in the gas tank. 1/3 in each place. Should clean things up.

Sorry I am not a huge car expert, I can buy seafoam where? Walmart or autozone?
Autozone has it, about $10 a can. I'll take a photo of the booster hose when I get home.
Thank you so much! I can be a do-it-yourselfer, but I have no experience (I'm good at taking things apart and putting them back together). I change my oil, do my tires, do the filters, spark plugs, i can do a fuel filter, etc.
One thing I wanted to also ask, do you think it could be the oxygen sensor. I have changed one of the two before. Thoughts?
Have you scanned the ODBII and see if there are any pending codes? Even though yer "Check Engine" light may not be on...it will still set pending codes without lighting up the "Check Engine" light.
You might be better off buying a diagnostic setup like AutoEnginuity and looking a what yer engine is doing. It can capture data that yer most likely to miss by guessing what it might be.
Did you measure/check the TPS (throttle position sensor) across it's full range to see if it's measuring smoothly? How many miles do you have on the car?
Could you shoot some video (safely of course) and post it up. Please turn off any accessory that might interfere with the audio.

I have no idea what the BOLDED means (TPS), It has about 147,000. I have a friend who has one of those diagnostic things you plug in under the steering wheel, I shall try that.

First picture is the hose clamped to the brake booster, remove the clamp and hose then attach a funnel(I have the wrong size in the picture but you get the idea).

Its possible, is the Check Engine Light on? or pending codes like BamZipPow noted?
