lemegacool's turbo 1mz 5spd camry build thread

well as some of you may know i'm ditching the laminova intercooled M90 supercharger for a turbo... i just... dunno... love turbos more :P lol

so here is the official lemegacool diy forced induction gen3 camry build thread!!!

so!

i bought a holset hx35w turbo on ebay for 250$ shipped... (costed me 50$ of duties so 300$ total for the turbo to my door!) turbo had minimal lateral play
and no in/out play at all! i could have used it as is... but well as well rebuild it and make it shiny!!! :P

i dont have a pic of the whole turbo when i got it as i was too exited and torn it appart right after i got it lol

basically the holset hx35w turbo is a internally wastegated turbo with a 12cm2 turbine housing, twin scroll t3 flange, 53mm compressor inducer, 76mm comp
exducer,70mm turbine inducer and 60mm turbine exducer

i'm not going to be using the internal wastegate so i'm just going to cut the flapper and weld the hole. a tial 38mm external wastegat will control the turbo

once the turbo appart i used my ultrasonic cleaner with degreaser in it to clean all the turbo's parts

clean as new!!! and NO scrubbing the impellers manually ! woot for ultrasonic!!!

here is the center housing and the exhaust housing

the compressor cover is at my work as i'm polishing it in my breaks

555 timer injector pulser thigny i made to pulse my supra injectors wile i gave them a bath in the ultrasonic cleaner its good to up to 50 amps worth
of injectors lol

you may remember one of my first threads about my 1mzfe lacking power... well the more the time was going the more i was beginin to suspect the
knock sensors to be the cause of my troubles...

after finding this in the archives : http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/ar...p/t-16879.html and readed tony's 1'st reply in the thread
i knew it had to be the knock sensors... to further coonfirm i went for a ride with my scanner on my laps and i watched the timing when i was giving gas...
well long story short i had really shitty timing advance...

then last weekend i finally decided to stop procrastinating and relocated my knock sensors!!! at the same time i changed the valve covers gaskets, coolant bypass
hose, lower intake gaskets and checked my valve clearances!!

here are the pictures of the weekwend!

before the surgery! :P

ripped all this suff appart under 30 min lol (gray lower intake is my ported and polished one not the one thats on the car) the reason i ripped all this stuff appart
so fast is because i wanted to do a compression test on the engine while it was still hot! using a harbor freight comp gause set i got 205 psi on all 6 cylinders
!!! good! good! :P

then while the upper plenum was off i had a urge to test fit the unfinished blower project for shit and giggles :P

the fit was near perfect exept the pulley was like 3/8 offset of the crank pulley! lol not bad for redneck winter time measuring lol

i then proceeded to remove the lower intake to get to the damn kock sensors!!!

to remove them the fsm calls for a SST... i replaced it with a crescent wrench lol. you can see the brand new coolant bypass hose!
for now i just tucked the harness away while i did the valve covers...

then i spliced the 2 knock sensor wires together and their shielding too. i needed to extend the harness to fit the single knock sensor to the dogbone
bracket like eye8pussies did. luckily i have several hundred feets of shielded audio wiring i salvaged from scrap!!! so i just soldered the spliced signal wire
and the shield onto my extention harness and soldered the plug on the other end. covered it all with black protective cover...

now what you want to know! DID IT WORK??!?!?!? you bet it worked!!! it was the exact cause of why my car was such a slug! relocating the knock sensors
gave me a LOT!!! of power back! i can now really see what a 5 speed findanza flywheeled and lightened pulley 1mz can do! lets just say that it rips and its like
i just got a whole new car!!!

so go read tony's post in the tread i posted up and if your 1994 1mz camry match the symptoms he describes then you got a kock sensor issue!

after all the mechanics this car has stumped i can now say that the lack of power is GONE!

valve cover off pr0n!!! :P all my valves were in spec and no sludge wooooot!

custom exhaust layout!!! this is going to be my exhaust while i piece off everything i need for the turbo build...

i just cant wait to scrap the crappy bosal y pipe i have on there currently, you know the really crappy one that shoots each bank at each others lol

the "Y" after the resonator will be a custom made electric cutout! hehehe

stainless flanges are expensives to buy... so i decided to cut some on scrap stainless i found at work! :P

thast it for now i'm tired of typing!!! :P

I know EXACTLY what you mean. I tackled the same project myself, but I had the luxury of time. I was using another car while it was apart. Had I had the RL, I would have taken more time

i do clean work but i'm still a redneck/crazy quebecois LOL

Le Quebecois fou!

thanks guys! :P

first thing to do for futur turbo is to relocate the battery/ delete cruise for the turbo... i had all the 0 gauge wiring i needed for it but i used it to make a giant inductor for my homemade tig welder lol need to buy more!

once battery is out i will start slow by relocating as much stuff i can to make room for both up pipes and 3" downpipe. since the turbo i have is a twin scroll housing i will run each bank of 3 cylinders to one port on the turbo! so each scroll will have its own 3 cylinders
