If you have Advance Auto nearby use Mobil-1 fully synthetic ATF using their discount coupon code. You should come close to $5.50 or so per quart depending on the discount.

Next tier are the Walmart SuperTech Mercon-V just under $4 and Castrol Import Multi-vehicles ATF just under $5. (you can see the advantage of using Mobil-1 at these prices).

Then it's the plain dino fluid, for example, the under-$3 SuperTech ATF. If you buy 1 gallon jugs each gallon is under $10.

All are Dexron-III type compatible.

That's great. The closest Advance to Calif is in Colorado. Oh well.

Does synthetic ATF make a different in shift quality compare to regular ATF or is it just for fluid durability? This is making wish I filled my transmission and diff with synthetic, but I got Valvoline Dex/Merc for $2.50 a bottle so I shouldn't really complain.

The synthetic fluid should maintain the shift quality longer and hold up against heat better. But initially they should both be the same. I'd still change the fluid every 10-15K miles because the A-series is kinda dirty unless you have a Magnefine on there they the fluid will probably stay red for a longer period of time.

You can try Mobil-1 or SuperTech Mercon-V that's suitable for D-III at least in the differential. The ST Mercon-V is about $3.90/qt so not a real advantage for those who can by Mobil-1 for a little more.
