Maybe switch to GM Synchromesh fluid and see if it helps.

Next step would be to replace all synchros when the transmisson is disassembled. Look up a local ATRA transmission rebuilders assoc member shop in the area. Some are duds but probably better than the corner garage.

I work in a shop, but haven't personally rebuilt a trans. Co-worker just rebuilt a Ford ZF 6-speed though. Was contemplating enlisting his help for a little cash.

I need some confusion cleared up..... FSM says we have a S51. All the rebuilt kit sellers claim S52. Whats the deal?

On this tranny is it likely even worth rebuilding or just trying to get ahold of a used unit and do Synchromesh in it? I tried it in mine a while back to no avail.

Thought I4 gets the S51 and V6 gets the E153. But S52 seems to be used interchangeably in the aftermarket maybe by mistake (but sure is a "common" mistake ). For example Transtar for later (92-01) Camrys lists S52. But not sure if yours has the single or dual cone 2nd synchros as it lists both for those years. What does the manufacturing sticker say? S51?

A used transmission could be a crapshoot. You may end up having to do the synchros in that anyway.

With new synchros you are fine with Redline MT-90; second, with worn synchros go with GM Synchromesh at 40% more cost; the last step of course is a rebuild. But if you don't mind the cost maybe straight to GM synchromesh fluid.

S51 on the sticker. Wondering now what to order if I decide to rebuild.... Transtar has different part #'s for their S51 and S52 listings. I'll probably give them a holler tomorrow.
I have Valvoline Synthetic in it now after the Pennzoil Synchromesh didn't help. Might put BG synthetic GL5 in it. Or perhaps Schaeffer's.

Valvoline started putting limited slip friction modifier in their synthetic gear oil, just like everybody else. So these fluids are only good for non-synchronized manuals now. Using them may increase the wear on the synchros.

Ok a little off the path that this thread has taken, but there are no synchros in 1st gear. It should really only be selected once the car is stopped. If it's getting tough going into 1st, have a look at the clutch.

S51 is fully synchronized. It has a single core 1st gear synchro and a double core 2nd gear synchro. Later ones got double core on the stinking 5th too.

I stand corrected, I've never seen nor owned a stick that didn't fight a little going into 1st while in motion.

Hmmmm.... Would Redline MT90 work? Its what I threw in my moms Miata per the owners club recommendations.

I haven't seen a non-synchronized first in a while, but they certainly exist.

Makes it interesting to order the right kit. One piece two piece, red piece blue piece....

i use redline MT 90 in my RX-7's and i've had nothing but excellent results. the MT 90 should be fine in the Camry, as it takes 80W90 GL-5. i have standard valvoline in my 92 SE right now but will be switching to redline after i get the car out of storage this week.
