Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
1 more thread about my accident and I won't discuss it anymore!
Okay, so I been thinking this thru...not at all patiently and getting angrier by the day. Couldn't even sleep last night was so angry til the sun rose.
Anyway...I want to move the car out of the impound lot. I was really pissed about that yesterday because I completely forgot in the rush of the accident that I have AAA Premier which could have towed the car for me (for free) anywhere I wanted within a 200 mile distance. Even though I was further from home than that...I should have had them tow it and myself to the hospital for the night instead of the ambulance. But I was in pain and thought I'd broken something and couldn't think straight. THEN the next day I could have just got a storage rental place and parked the car in there until the insurance of the at fault person handles it.
But NOOOO, I assumed the insurance would be handling it right away. Almost 2 weeks later I still don't have a dime from the accident. I just paid $300 for parts that were on the car for a week: The A/C compressor and dryer. My new Sony radio is in there along with all my tools I couldn't bring them with me on the way home.
At this point I just want the car moved to a storage facility of my own so I can dismantle some of it. Part me is thinking of even keeping the vehicle after they pay me the blue book value of it and letting the guy who fixed my t-bone earlier this year (was able to do a $2,000 job into a $640 job) work on it and just KEEP it in the MEANTIME until the whole case settles completely and then get something different. Right now I'm concerned about the car part of it.
But that would involve shipping it back here for $500-1,000 minimum. Unless I find someone in Washington to fix it for backyard prices. Would it be worth keeping? Sorry to show the pics again...but just wondering if it's worth it or not? (paying attention to back end) side damage is easy to fix just 2 doors to buy. Front...I'm kind of worried about.
I'm thinking just letting them pay the value for it and let me keep it...strip some parts and then turn to a junkyard. Is that easy?
2nd option is to just leave it, and take the money to buy an early to mid 90s Lexus. But are Lexus that old good cars? I hear people pouring lots of money into them as if they are a headache?

Aint no way in hell you can fix that. At least not cheap. Definite frame damage, not worth it.
Move on and buy a new car.
Well it had frame damage before on the passenger side. 6 inches in. The guy just put it on a frame machine in his backyard, stretched it with a remote control and was done by the end of the day. welded it all up.
Other estimates involved 4-5 days of body work at $2,000+.
I heard that cases with rear-ends involve cutting the car off where the damage is and re-welding a new piece to it.
The LS400 is a pretty reliable car with a bulletproof motor. If you're willing to pay more for gas, and parts when needed, I would buy it. How many miles on it?

One doesn't say the other says over 200,000.
I really don't want a car with over 200,000 like mine did, I won't buy one that's wrecked either ironically LOL.
Another had 178,000 on it. Which isn't bad either.
The reason why I'm buying something older now is because I don't want to be in a car payment because of this. I'm thinking of moving out of the country eventually so just want something for now...but that's still going to be reliable enough for the road.
I was just hoping not so much to fix the car, but to get some parts off it.
$500 back for parts is money I can use towards getting something fixed on the new car. Like trading out the stock stuff for an in dash GPS/ CD player. I'm just miffed I just put the parts on there. But, if it increases the KBB value of it, then guess I can just leave it.
Anyway I can atleast do that without actually buying the car back? BTW...the car isn't sold or anything yet. Just sitting in the lot collecting fees.

I'm with Chris on this one. Aside from the obvious frame damage, you would practically have to get a new shell. Take the money, walk away. You should have access to a rental for a certain period of time (insurance paid). I would look into that for the time being

Also, forgot to talk about this one. Impound lot fees ARE covered by insurance. I know this is fact in Michigan. A friend totalled his '10 Corolla a few months back, and the impound fees for the time Michigan State Police had it were covered, and that amount wasn't cut out of his check. Hope that helps

96ToyoCam164K may I inquire how far the car is from your home?
May I suggest you call AAA and ask if you get them a copy of the tow invoice, will they reimburse you, in the past they have for me, cannot recall the particulars as it was yrs. ago.
Your behaviour was what to be expected in a stressful situation. To repair the quarter and bumper similiar to your requirements I was quoted a couple of yrs. ago $3300. I had it repaired for $700 but my quarter was able to be pulled straight. Yours won't be, it is too damaged, and would have to be cut out and replaced. Not certain what a back yard fellow would charge for that, ask the fellow you previously dealt with.

Call your insurer and see what options/suggestions they have about you getting the car back.
It's 1,200 miles from here
I can't get an invoice from AAA because I never called them to tow the car. At the time I didn't even realize the car would be taken to an impound fee lot. And it wasn't even the police lot, it was a company contracted by the police to remove vehicles from accidents. I wish they would have atleast asked me, "do you have roadside assistance?" Then I would have said, "yes, I have AAA"
I mean, at the very least I could have moved the vehicle with my AAA membership and then took off the compressor and dryer, mailed it back home, put it in the same boxes in my closet and got a refund. But it's not like I had it all planned out...so the thought never came to mind.
But I'm saying, if I tell them I want to keep the car for parts, but still accept the KBB value of it (which they have to give since it's totalled) and sell the parts...meanwhile keeping the car in a Uhaul storage lot for a monthly fee until i can get out that way again to take it apart...wouldn't that be more beneficial than letting it go outright?
