3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
really depends on the year or generation. i'm a third gen owner and SE lover, and i've done a lot of research and have owned two SE V6's with a 5spd and an XLE. i also have the factory brochures and factory service manuals for reference.
LE is a step up form the Deluxe model and added such standards as a/c, color keyed mirrors and side mouldings, cruise, a higher end stereo, and a more plush interior. the LE was available with a 3VZ-FE and that also included rear disc brakes. all transmission choices were automatic.
XLE is the top of the line and adds to the LE with a standard moonroof, aluminum wheels, more powerful audio system, and the option of leather interior. both the LE and XLE are available with the 5S-FE I4 or the 3VZ-FE V6
SE was a special model that added XLE options to a sportier package. the SE received the 3VZ-FE as the standard engine as well as a 5spd manual trans. the only Camry to offer the V6 with a 5spd. the SE had a moonroof, a/c, special aluminum wheels, high end ETR stereo, 4wheel disc brakes, rear spoiler, cruise, and it had a leather wrapped steering wheel and special cloth sport seats with large side bolsters. the SE however lacked many features of the XLE to include sound absorbing carpet on the bottom of the trunk lid and had no hood insulation. the SE also had black mirrors and door handles, but had body colored moulding.
DX = base model. No power windows, door locks, antenna. AC was optional, but commonly ordered with it. Usually found with a 4 cyl, although V6 was an option. Automatic tranny was optional, but commonly ordered with it by the dealers. Exterior door handles and rear view mirrors are black, although I think they match the car color on gen3.5's
LE = Gets all the power acc mentioned above as standard, including AC. Mirrors & door handles match the car's paint. Most commonly ordered by dealers with the I4, although V6 engines can be found fairly easily.
XLE = Gets all the LE stuff, but with soft-touch climate control buttons. Sun roof standard. Power driver's seat. Most commonly ordered by dealers with the V6, although I4 engines can be found. Leather interior standard (I think?)
SE = What mazdaverx7 said.
ABS brakes were a $1,000 dollar option on all of 'em. I4 engine equipped cars had 14" wheels, V6 got 15". In '94, the V6 changed from the 3VZ-FE (iron block) to the 1MZ-FE (aluminum block). A 2 door coupe came out in '95? Very rare to find, as they didn't sell well.
Some of the option details changed with the Gen3.5's.

1996 Avalon XLS, ABS brakes, moonroof, white, acquired w/ 139k miles, now at 261k.
2001 Yamaha FZ1, Ivan's jet kit, resprung all around, Ohlins in the rear, Race Tech cartridge emulators in the forks, 45k miles.
Ah, OK, thx! Most of 'em that I saw had the leather, so I probably mis-remembered it being standard. XLE's were usually loaded to the gills with all the options. My LE stickered at a bit under $21k, and I think I once saw an XLE pushing $25k!!

yeah the XLE's were very expensive for their time period but were loaded to the gills with every option possible. the leather interiors hold up exceptionally well but i prefer the cloth seats. my first Camry was an XLE with cloth. that car ran exceptionally well and drove like a dream. i sold it with 218K miles.
i can't confirm that they do. i'm waiting on some Camry literature to come in the mail. when it arrives i may be able to answer that question. it would make sense that it would have larger sway bars or different spring rates and or different compound for the bushings. but i don't know that for a fact so i don't want to provide any false information.
Never heard of a Gallery Edition. Somewhere along the line there's a "Collector's Edition" that got two-tone paint. I've seen one near where I work that's light beige over dark beige... pretty bold, eh?
I forgot to mention rear disk brakes. IIRC, in '92, springing for either the V6 or ABS brakes got you rear disk brakes in lieu of drums. But I think that changed quickly, because I've seen lots of people post that their cars contradict that statement.

The car IS two tonegray, .. Hmmmm? It actually looks very nice, it also has a little spoiler and it has Toyota wheels... nice ones...moon-roof,
electric seats but i don't think 8 way.
Not yet mentioned: The Gen3-3.5, SE, 5spd. models, had a lower final drive ratio (higher numerically), differential ratio, that picked up their lower speed acceleration numbers significantly.
