3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I am planning on swapping out my filler neck before it becomes and issue....I did some searching on this forum and did not find anything for the 1998 that helped me.. Rockauto has a Dorman #577-952 for $108 shipped. Rockauto say it needs to be USA built? Autozone lists the same part for $168 but says i need to have a 1,4, or a 5 as the first digit in the vin. I also found this website http://www.am-autoparts.com/1998/Toy...illerNeck.html and they have the part for $85 shipped. Has anyone done this repair before? what part did you use and where did you get it? was it a tough repair? do I need the filler shield? Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes...there are a few threads in here that cover the fuel neck replacement with piccies. Do a quick search, please.
I did do a search.there is a sticky for a 96? I have a 98. The 98 has a different part. I did not find anything that answered my questions. I am not a noob. I have 50,000 auto forum posts. 95% of them are me helping others. Once I figure out the Camry my plan "was" to be helping others. I have been on these things since Al Gore invented the internet. I have noticed this forum does discourage members from starting threads. I think the plan is working! Thanks for your help.

I ruminated over your post for a few minutes . I must tell you IMHO you are on the wrong track. The whole idea about learning anything is by having Conversations about the subject. On the Auto forums new ideas and conversations are "posts" and "threads". You are acting like the "gestapo" and discouraging that IMHO.

You did ask fer any advice...
I'm still here but I don't want to git attacked by you or git accused of discouraging new threads/posts. I didn't think I was being Gestapo-ish with just a simple request. I didn't think I expressed any bitterness/anger/genocide towards you or yer family fer yer race/religious beliefs/color of yer car (which I believe history shows that the Gestapo did exactly that...okay...maybe not the color of yer car). I didn't see which posts you had looked at as you didn't indicate which exact ones you looked at
If you want to be sarcastic...you really should put quotation marks around yer statement of "Thanks fer yer help". It helps define yer true intent and doesn't leave it up to too much interpretation. Smilies work, too!
Did you look at any of my previous posts prior to yers? I don't think I've been discouraging anyone from making new posts...in some cases I actually point them to the actual threads that will help them (if I have the time to do that).
If you didn't find anything in these forums using search, then either the 1998 Camry doesn't have a fuel neck problem, or the people who had them got the repair performed by a mechanic, or they didn't document the procedure on here. Did you find anything else on the internet about the process? If not, I guess you'll be the first to replace the pipe...please document and post up piccies so others may benefit from yer kindness.
I understand the fuel filler tube is a different part...but I would believe the procedure is pretty much the same with maybe the same parts to look out fer.
I don't know what yer background is or how mechanically inclined/trained you are. That wasn't evident in yer first post. If the assumption was made that everyone posting on the forums had years of automotive work and thousands of posts in other areas...I guess that would make sense. I'd like to see the forum where you have 50,000 forum posts...please? I might learn something or two.
Is this yer website? Woody's Fairlane Site If so, nice website. Sorry I didn't know that was you before. If you do such a nice job at restorations...you should be able to document what the differences between the 96 Camry instructions vs the 1998 Camry procedures. Thanks in advance! If it's not yers...my bad.
I didn't see where you posted yer VIN (designates where yer Camry was made since there are 2 choices, Japan or USA) to indicate any notion that you had that information or knowledge. Please do that at yer earliest convenience.
I know you have a 1998 Camry. Since other information wasn't provide or asked fer...I'll do that now.
What month/year was yer Camry made? What trim level (CD, LE, XLE)? I4 or V6? Auto or manual transmission? USA or Japan built? This information is vital fer you to git the correct part...fer example:

Do you have a service manual to work from? If you can't find one off of eBay, you can use/download the online one from Toyota Techinfo. They have different account services but most users use the Standard (48 hours) account fer $15. You will have access to Service Bulletins, Repair Manuals, Wiring Diagrams, and Other Technical Information. Great deal...

Provide information that we can use to help you. You should already know that since you've got 50,000 posts in an automotive forum.
In case you didn't read it the first time...

Most of if not all the info that you mentioned above I had in my very first post. I did not come right out and say my VIN started with a J, which it does, but i implied it with the question about the Dorman part that wanted your VIN to start with a 1,4 or a 5.
I am a big signature advocate I had had all the info about my car in my signature. I use my BB a lot to help out on the "Ford Truck" forums and having a good signature on each post helps out tremendously when using a Mobil device.....
Maybe we can just start over!!!!!.....thanks for your help I appreciate and I am not being sarcastic!
