3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 1996 camry with the 2.2 liter. I need a replacement motor. The block on mine is bad. I am confused about which 2.2 I have. A guy told me that the 92-95 2.2s wont fit in the 1996. And then I saw that a 2.2 manufactured after june 1996 uses the 4th gen 2.2 block like the 1997 and up. The inside of my door panel says it was manufactured on 8/1995. Are all the blocks the same from 1992-1996 and just the head different or what. So can I get a motor out of a 92-95 or not. And if not why? Thanks for the help in advance.
Not trying to be a pain here but why did that guy tell me that his motor would not fit a 1996? Did he just not know what he was talking about? And will any of the celica motors fit in my 96 camry?
When he said that about the dates, he was talking about how cars made after 08/96 are considered 97. He's just confused. If his engine is from a car before 08/96 and yours is too, then it will work.
Another quick question. Why is my 2.2 labeled a "VIN 5th Digit G" and the 92-95 "VIN 4th digit S"?
From 96 and newer, the 5th digit on the VIN for Toyota identify the engine. "G" stand for 5S-FE. From 1980-95, The 4th number on the VIN identify the engine family. "S" stands for the S-series engine in which the 5S-FE fits in.
Not trying to beat a dead horse hear but I just want to be clear. Any 2.2 liter from 1992 to 1996 will fit my 1996 camry without swapping heads as long as it was manufactured before 8/96. Is this correct?

Yes, 1992 to 1996 engines (easy recognized by a distributor cap) should be a direct replacement for your 1996 Camry. There may be some tiny different between a J-VIN and a U.S. engine like a connector or two. Other than that, it should be a drop in.
From what I understand, the 97+ 5S-FE engines also don't have engine oil coolers. This created a lot of the sludge problems and lawsuits. If you do end up getting one without a cooler, replace your oil more often.
