3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My '93 Camry, V6 had been sitting for a while, waiting for a new radiator. I put a new one in, charged the battery, and it fired right up. I let it run for a while, then turned it off. I started it back up, just to make sure the battery had a good charge, but after starting it, it wouldn't idle. It's like someone just yanked a vacuum hose off. It was that sudden. It runs fine, but just flat out won't idle. I disconnected the battery cables, thinking it might 'reset' the computer, but no change. When I hold the gas pedal, it idles smooth, but as soon as I let off the pedal, it just dies.
None of the vacuum lines seem brittle or loose. Could it be a sensor or something? Any ideas??

Other than the year, it sounds like our cars are about the same, BMR. I bought mine used, hoping that it's overheating problem was head gaskets, but it wound up having cracked heads. Got those replaced, so hopefully it's good to go now! It's got about 155,000 miles on it, so I've got a long way to go to catch up with you. Since we have the same motor, can you tell me if you've had any major issues with it, or if you've done any modifications of any kind. After having this car, I'm kind of scared of the motor, due to the problems mine has had, as well as some of the things I've read. So it would be nice to hear from someone who has lots of miles on theirs!!
No major issues with the engine. The transmission was replaced at 59,600 miles; barely within warranty! Several of the reliable people on this board have posted that this V6 engine (3VZ-FE) is prone to blowing head gaskets, but I haven't had any probs with 'em yet <knocks on wood>.
Mods? Nothing significant. The ignition timing is set at 15 degrees BTDC instead of the normal 10 degrees. And I've tweaked the AFM to lean it out a little bit; it's set up too rich from the factory.

Thanks for the info! When I had the heads replaced, I bought the 'updated' gaskets, so hopefully there won't be any problems. I bought it from some friends I went to school with, who were the original owners. Body and interior are immaculate, but it just overheated on him on his way home from work one night, so they went and bought a new Honda. It runs pretty good overall, but the trans shifts abruptly from 1st to 2nd gear sometimes. Overall, it's a really nice, comfortable car.
