3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Ok I am looking to get into another camry. Today I went to look it over. Its a 97 camry Le I4 . windows, radio, air conditioning all seemed to work. Even had a set of non OEM alloy wheels, with new (cheap) tires, along with a decent tint job.
I am hoping to get it checked out by pepboys or mechanic who helped me find my old camry on MONDAY.
here is the bad, and want to know if these are easy fixes.
The gas / fuel door does latch doesnt lock. so pretty much you can just open the gas door without having to pull the switch. IS THIS an easy fix/ replacement item?
The seats are not power seats, but atleast one is kinda messed over, possible cigarette ember burns,.. There are alot of 4th gens in the area being parted out. Is it pretty easy to unbolt and replace these seats? It is a powered seat.
Like i said the i am going to have a mechanic check it out monday. as of now i know there is no leak out of the valve cover gasket. has what looks like a newer battery.
******* It was taken yesterday for an emission test, and IT FAILED OBD Readiness. How many miles must it be driven to turn that off, or could it be another issue?
50 miles usually gets it all ready. but if it failed readiness, willing to bet it had a code and someone reset right before inspection, hoping to pass.
Wasn't your previous Camry a V6, I would get another. The I4 is terribly slow.
Yeah i had a v6 and loved it, but i cant seem to find another v6 in my price range around here. It would be easier to get a lexus es300, but everyone that i go to see it seems somebody else buys it immediately without getting checked out, or they did their own visual inspection and bought. Odd thing is most times they are asking more for a v6 camry than the lexus es300 of close to same years

ok i will see if i can get the owner to drive it a little bit before monday. I HOPE ITS NO major problem, Its a possibility the car sat for some months with a dead battery. could that also cause the issue?

I was looking to get something 5k or less, including initial repairs i might have to make. most times i find a decent v6 camry 96 or newer, they are asking 4200 , and will still have some sort of problem like either window or windows wont let down, all for tires bald, air conditioner not working, or already have 240k miles on them. I would go on and TRY to scrimp to pay the extra, if i didnt know other people are finding good deals on them somewhere. (i havent been able to find yet)
you know like relatives, or friends who you know use to take care of their car, or people who diagnose a dead battery as a dead engine.
Here's a thread I posted a while ago. It's about readiness monitors. For your model year, you can have two of them not set and still pass smog. If you have a scanner you can check to see which ones aren't set, and if it's just one, or two, don't worry, you will pass smog. But this is separate and apart from the Nox, HC etc. Movel years 2001 and later only can have one monitor not set.
You can also search for Toyota's TSB on drive cycles. It's called EG003-02 and it has all the drive cycles for years 1996-2002. Here's one link to the TSB. I'm pretty sure it's ok to post TSB's. If not, I'm sure I'll hear about it.

Hmm. I will print it for the owner, I really dont want to buy it before it passes the test. Some sort of law here in Ga you cant sell a car that wont pass the emissions testing , unless you notify buy in writing. (or something like that) PLUS before last camry got totalled i had just put major money into it to pass the emissions in May.
