I've got a 1997 XLE which I bought 4 years ago, and the doors won't stay open (they never have), even on small inclines. It affects all 4 doors, so I'm just guessing normal wear/tear. Is there anything to adjust and/or replace to fix this, or is it something I've just got to live with. What keeps the doors open, the hinges, or that black bar thing or ???
typically doors aren't supposed to "lock open" . They swivvle on the hinges. that black part is a stop, that prevents the door from over-opening and damaging the fender / door.
not 100% positive this is the black thing but heres what i found 97 xle v6 nap built (just punched in random engine and where it was built since i wasn't sure)
CHECK ASSY, FRONT DOOR, LH
68620-AA020
CHECK ASSY, FRONT DOOR, RH
68610-AA020
CHECK ASSY, REAR DOOR, RH
68630-AA010
CHECK ASSY, REAR DOOR, LH

hope that helps

Thanks everybody. I replaced the black bar/door stop/check assembly (different names for the same thing) on both front doors, and voila, problem solved!! I'm not used to the door staying open, I'm still waiting for it to bash into my leg . What also really helped, was a YouTube video I found that showed how to remove the front door panels, which is required to replace the part. Be careful, I found 2 videos, one that showed the right way, while the other one...well..he did get the panel off
adalex - you were right-on-the-money with the parts numbers.
Dealer wanted $150/door to replace it. I bought the part for $68 online and replacing the part was not hard at all. I love saving the money.
Just ordered parts so I can do the rear doors.

Your very welcome man, it drives me nuts when I see people with body kits, big mufflers etcs on their camry or w/e but half the lights on the inside don't even work, I love it when things just work as they should (no matter how simple, ie the 2$ bulbs on the hvac on the controls) my car may not be pretty but stuff works :P

Thanks for updating on this; I'm in the same boat with my 97, and it's starting to get dangerous getting out of the car. My dog doesn't understand and hops out as the door is coming back at her. Not fun.
Would you please post the link to the YouTube video that's the correct one on how to fix this? With my luck all I'd find is the other one.

+1 to that. Just replaced the cluster lens (last one was so scratched I couldn't see much through it) and the burnt-out shift indicator light. Most people would have thought I was being fussy, but it's purely for function.

I've picked up replacement ones at the local pick and pull. Sometimes they are tough to gauge because other cars can be in the way from opening the door all the way, but are sold for $3-4 each. I have one more to replace, but will continue to keep an eye out for more really good ones because neither that I bought are 'strong-as-new.' Since most of my original ones offered little or no resistance, even good used ones were a significant improvement.

Excellent, key point is covering the tip of your screwdriver with masking tape to avoid marring your door panel. The fellow on YouTube doesn't do this, no wonder..the condition of the door panel is in such bad shape.
Please click on the "Thanks" icon in the bottom right corner of this post if you find it useful RedAlicat, will do wonders for your karma
The good tip of the YouTube video is using a drill to undo the fasteners. To find the YouTube video put "Camry door panel" and you should come across it and others. Good luck.

I just fixed my 2 back doors (similar procedure as front doors), so now all 4 stay open, so no more complaining from wife or kids (it was justified, I wouldn't like doors wacking me either). A little advice, buy a box of door panel clips before taking off door panels. In addition to the clips I busted (they're pretty brittle after 14 years), there were other clips previous panel removers busted and didn't replace . The dealer wanted $5 a clip!!! I got a box of about 20 online for $1.75 each. I think the front doors had 4 each and the back doors 5 each. I replaced all of them.
Also getting the door handle trim off is tricky. 3 of my 4 got cracked in one way or another ( 1 by me, 2 by some previous handyman). The video makes it look easier than it is. It's hard to explain. Once you get one off you'll get it. The top and bottom of the trim pop over the hinge. The top one you need to pry up and over the hinge, while the bottom you need to pry down over the hinge.

RedAliCat, sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I haven't been on here in awhile. I see Brit101 got a link to a video. Here's the video I liked: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZwimvl3SZs
