Replacing Valve Cover Gasket - Need to drain oil?

I am going to attempt smilecow's DIY on replacing the valve cover gasket (DIY valve cover gasket (pics)) and was wondering if I needed to drain the oil first? Sorry if that is a dumb question...

Also, is there anything else that should be done while the valve cover is off? I've read that people usually also replace the spark plug seals... where are these and are they easy to change?

Thank you!!!

The seals he has pictured go under the 29mm nuts, I believe.

I see no need to drain the oil. Often times in older vehicles, people adjusted the valves with the valve cover off and the engine running.

no need to drain the oil on a valve cover/spark plug tube seal replacement job.
