Relief Valve

A while ago I changed my oil pan gasket and while I was in there I cleaned the relief valve because on startup I have a 1-4 second delay before I get any pressure, and the pressure does not rise as much as it should per revolution. 25 psi seems to be the max while hot and 55 cold. It idles around 50 psi cold. The valves rattle while passing or accelerating when hot.

When I got the c-clip out only three parts fell out, the clip, a washer that goes between the spring and c-clip, and the spring. The valve itself did not come, and I couldn't get it out (though I didn't grab it and force it). It didn't move very easily at first but then after I cleaned it I could push it up a bit and it would fall back down some. How is the valve supposed to act? Should it travel the whole bore freely? I saw no other way of getting it out, so that must have been how it got in there.

I have college coming up soon and I'll need the car then so I have to find out where my pressure is going.

Yup the valve should just slide out really easily with a light coatin of oil. I would suggest pulling that relief valve out and honing that cylinder it rides in. More than likely there's a lot
Of varnish in there causing it to be stuck.

Anybody got the part number for the oil pump gasket? I'm having a hard time finding just the gasket... They tend to come with a new oil pump.

Year of the car and the engine would be real useful information at this point.

And are you looking for the big gasket (that seals the main housing to the engine) or the o-ring (that seals the smaller housing containing the rotor to the main housing)?

Main housing to block. It's a 92 5SFE.

Believe that would be 15197‑63021 (Gasket, Oil Pump). List is around $6.

If you're not in a hurry, I've got a Toyota OEM one out in my parts bin I could let you have for cost of shipping. Given the list price, 'tho, that probably wouldn't save you much.

I cleaned the relief valve and it works fine now, but the problems persist. I'm afraid my low oil pressure may be from worn bearings. Next time I get a chance to mess with it I'll remove the balance shafts and see how much that affects my oil pressure. If I can afford it I'll replace the main bearings while I'm there, but it will probably be a while until I can do anything because I start college tomorrow.

Thanks for the help.

Relief valve setting is whatever the spring rate is. It's possible I guess that the spring is weak. You could try a new spring and see if that improves pressure.
