What holds the front wheel hub to the bearing?

Hi all.

I replaced my front right wheel bearing on my 99 Camry, and I had a machine shop press in the the new bearing inside the knuckle, and presse the wheel hub into the bearing.

A snap ring kept the bearing in the knuckle, but nothing keeps the hub in the bearing, other than the axle nut and friction. I wouldn't think the axle is good enough to keep the hub in the bearing, as I don't think the CV joints are meant to withstand tensile forces that would be generated when cornering.

Is there something I'm missing?

What keeps the hub in the bearing?

On a typical FWD application, the hub fits rather snug inside the bearing and is secured there by being sandwiched between the CV/stub axle and the outer retaining nut.

Not sure why you don't think this is secure? I'm sure that is stronger than many other parts of the front suspension.

its a tapered fit, the hub through the bearing. it requires a puller to be removed from the bearing. once the hub axle is removed from the hub and bearing, you can remove the snap ring (aka Jesus clip) from the back side of the hub and then press the wheel bearing out.

it's pressed in. the nut tightens it to the outer shaft. it' aint coming apart.

Confused. You don't think a 30mm nut that is either staked or cotter keyed torqued to 150 ft lbs is good enough to hold the pressed in hub to the bearing?

that 30mm nut is supposed actually to be torqued to 217ft-lbs
I'd say that is enough to hold things in place ... + the cotter pin to avoid any loosening ever. sounds good enough to me

The 30 mm axle nut is not holding the hub to the bearing. It's holding the hub to the axle. The CV joints in the axle are the only thing keeping the hub from coming off the bearing, other than the friction of the bearing/hub interface.


That's the point I was trying to make.

I'm surprised the axle CV joints are responsible for that. Usually joints aren't required to provide mechanical stability. They provide torque.

^ you realize that the bearing has an outer race and inner race? outer race is press fit into the hub (a few tons, maybe 12 ton press to install it?), so there is no way in hell that the bearing falls out of the hub! no need to "hold" it with anything... the axle sit in the inner race and is locked by splines. it doesn't need more, because there is nowhere else it can go

as you said, the hub is locked on axle with a 30mm nut, but then again the hub is press fit into the steering knuckle (bolted to ball joint, strut and outer tie rod end), so really there is nothing to worry about ...

you know hundreds of millions of vehicles with such setup run on the roads and it's all right
