3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have Toyota Camry 94 which I bought a year ago. Starting yesterday, there was check engine sign ON. I took my car to autozone but they told me that they could only diagnose cars after 96 year. Since, my car is an old car; I don't know where is the problem. Also, I have little knowledge on the car's mechanics.
I hope I would get some information on through this forum.
Does your car have the 4 or 6 cylinder engine? Some of the 94 V6 engines were already OBD2, what Autozone is talking about when they say 96 or newer. The 4 cylinder cars were all still OBD1. If you have the V6, look under dash and see if you can find the OBD2 connetor. Do a google search for OBD2 connector so know what it looks like. If your car is the V6 and you can find the OBD2 connector, then take your car back to Autozone and point out the connector and ask them to read the code. If your car is a 4 cylinder or doesn't have the OBD2 connector you can still read the code yourself with a piece of wire or a paperclip. Any service manual will have the procedure and what the codes mean. You can try google for that procedure, go to your public library for a manual, or purchase one at any parts store for around $15. Then report back here with the code and someone will be able to give you some direction.

Its toyota camry V6 engine and I will definitely check out odb2 board on it. Thanks!
OK, ignore my PM...assumed it was an I4...
OBD2 connector is behind the accessory drawer (to the left of the steering wheel). Open the drawer, and press the side inwards a bit so you can completely remove the drawer. Standard OBD2 connector right back there.

Thank you so much for the valuable help. When I look up in internet, it says that toyota camry 94 doesn't use ODB II. How to distinguish if the system is ODBII or not?
I opened the accessory drawer and found out some fuses on the left and something was on right. So that thing might be ObDII and I also have some picture https://picasaweb.google.com/deepesh...eat=directlink
The above link is the pictures. I appoligize cause I took it at night and my car's light was much insufficient

^ yes, that is an OBD2 connector on your '94 V6 camry. go again to autozone, and tell them that your car complies with OBD2 standard and show them the connector, they should be able to scan it and give you the codes.

sounds like the zone was being awful lazy. tisk tisk...
Yeah i think some of them are just DRONES, they use to always ask me with the 95 camry. and i would have to tell them i know it has obd-ii. Some i would swear roll their eyes like i didnt know what i was talking about until they saw the port lol. Plus half probably didnt want to go through the trouble of coming out in the 90 plus degree Georgia sun lol.
Thank you everyone for helping me out to identify the problem. One of my friend suggested to unplug the battery line for a while and check if the check engine light persists. I did that and there was no check engine sign on after that. That is the lesson that I learnt.
Meanwhile, there is a new problem in my car(I dont think its a big problem but just want to get some ideas). I think when I bought the car, i heard very less noise coming from the engine while I press gas button but now a days; I feel like its making a noise from the engine. Is there any way I can reduce the noise from the engine. As far as I remember, last time when I bought the car it didnt make a loud noise. I was late for changing engine oil, can that be the reason or the car is old so it is making that noise?
It's hard to diagnose a noise without hearing it. Does it sound like the engine exhaust is louder? If so, my first guess would be the flex pipe has cracked. It's underneath the engine; looks like braided steel sections within the exhaust path. They commonly crack and leak.

I feel like its not coming from the flex pipe but is coming from the engine itself. When I open my engine too it makes that noise. its not click click noise but a noise that is more familiar to being an old car I guess. However, previously i thought that there was not a single sound like this! Do, engine produce a sound when engine oil is not changed on time and like that?
