97 CV AXLE swap ?'s (passenger)

97 auto v6

1. are there any bolts securing the shaft into the Trans like on some nissan?

2. am i going to be able to get the shaft off (through) the lower engine mount without difficulty? Soaking in PB now, I know I will have to remove the snap ring and lower mount bolt.

3. If fluid is lost, where do I refill? Is it different from the ATF?

4. Whats best for a stuck shaft? Whale jaw vise grip and hammer?

Thanks guys

Your mileage may vary with this, but I just recently replaced mine (98, v6 auto).

I say attempt to remove because I spent a few hours pulling, hitting and cursing at the shaft before half of it pulled out and I had it towed to a shop to have the remaining shaft piece removed. At thenshop, it took two guys, one with a pneumatic hammer and then other with a pry bar to get the shaft out of the mount.

There is a video online of a guy who removes the motor mount, then cuts the shaft off to hammer it out, before puttingnthe mount back in the car, but unless you have some experience with that, you could be looking at a huge headache especially if the engine isn't lined up when you try to put the mount back in (note: you would obviously need to suspend the engine with either an engine hoist, or jack from underneath the oil pan with this method).

I couldn't tell you about the fluid question, I've never had fluid leak when replacing a shaft.

As I said before, your mileage may vary, but for me it was quite the pain in the ass.

thanks for the REPLY

Ive had the mount unbolted, but could not fish it out.

Seen said video, cant get a cut off wheel where he does because the gen 4 have the exhaust there.

Now I have the 4 motor mount bolts back in and am trying a homemade puller/banging to no avail.

Still have not tried heat ......

any tips? will update

Ok, for future searchers.

On my 97 v6, I had to drop the exhaust out of the way, Cut the shaft with a cutoff wheel, rip apart the inner CV joint, remove the motor mount ( main motormount bolt, 4 14mm bolts AND the 4 14mm bolts to bracket from motor mount to frame) (make sure motor is supported) with some fishing around, I got the mount out through the serp belt. few sledge hammer blows and the bearing free'd.
