unknown roaring noise

Have a 95 Camry 5S-FE. 367,000 Miles!

Making a roaring/grinding noise from the manifold, valve cover area. Guy who fixes cars part-time thinks its the AC compressor.
However, noise sounds like it is coming from on top of engine to me.

Prior to this problem, was hearing this noise and also noticed the water pump leaking so had him change the timing belt & water pump. After changing, still makes this noise. (timing belt needed changing anyway.)

Two questions.... If it is the AC compressor and I drive it until it goes out, can I keep driving it but just not depress the AC button? Read something about having to use a shorter belt since the Alt runs with the AC. Would think the clutch just wouldn't engage, correct?

Also, by in the spring I mistakenly put 5W-30 oil when I changed it. Live in MS. Changed it back to 10W-30. Noticed the oil has a reddish tint.

Would that have anything to do with noise?

thanks,
Tim

Probably should localize the noise -- a mechanics stethoscope, dowel rod, or piece of wood can be pressed against the various suspects to try to narrow down the culprit.

If it turns out to be the compressor, you probably want to fix it (or at least use a shorter belt to completely take it out of service). If you crater the compressor, there's a good chance you'll end up up crap contaminating the entire A/C system, which changes the repair from somewhat expensive to obscenely expensive.

5W-30 is a bit thin for the Camry, especially in MS, but probably wouldn't hurt for a few months. How long did you run it like that? I assume you mean the oil was reddish when you changed it?

Also a screwdriver. Stick the tip to various places and then stick your ear to the handle. When the noise is the loudest and most-clear, that should be the area you need to check out.
