3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Alright guy's I need ideas of what the problem with my car might be. Car will start run and die after several seconds on it's own or if you rev it up. When you take the key out of the ignition the temp gauge will go all the way up and the fan will turn on by itself and stay on for awhile then turn off and the temp gauge will go down. Not the Ecu, ignition switch , or safc. Engine has spark and gets fuel. I am stomped.
Car is a 1993 Camry 2.2 5sfe.
Thanks for your help in advance.

The first thing that comes to mind is the ECT sensor ... engine coolant temperature.
Do you think this part is probably ok? I think you can check it out if you have a service manual and a multimeter.
I'm not sure what happens if you just unplug it ... might be worth a try.

Oh shit Terry, better get ready for the worst and hope its only what he posted above!
This sounds like the same exact thing that happened to my brothers FD3S FX-7; he was sold a "great condition" car that had a blown motor to boot.
Once the engine gets warm, it completely dies and you can't restart until the engine cools off. Also, when you drive it to warm it up, it will also break down once warm. The BOV doesn't purge properly (sounds weird). Lastly, if you rev it up, it will stay running but you have to battle with the RPM's dropping and the engine trying to force itself to turn off.

I wish it was the ect sensor. It was the first thing I changed out. As son as I changed the fan started turning on after I took out the key of the ignition and the temp gauge would go all the way up. weird.

Is the temp gauge reading bogus (i.e. is the coolant outlet on the engine hot as hell, or not)?
Assume this is a false reading, I'd check your ground straps to the engine, especially if you've had the engine out of the car recently.
Have you been dinking around with the electrical system recently?
Yes, the temp gauge is reading bogus, the engine won't even run for a minute after the first time you start it and will turn off by it's self. It has not even had time to warm up at all.
And yes the engine and transmission were out of the car recently. A 5 speed manual transmission was swapped in, timing belt and water pump and serpitine belts were swapped out also. the engine harness was taken out with the engine and tranny.
Thanks everyone for your feedback I appreciate it!
