96 Camry - How Do You Bypass EGR?

So I broke the EGR actuator hose nipple clean and I am now waiting for the new part to come in. Meanwhile, my car is running rough and I would like to know if anyone knows how to by pass the EGR (for the sake of troubleshooting and getting the car to run better while waiting for the part).

I would try to plug the vacuum line thats running to it. Its probably sucking in air.

so the Modulator broke? Or did the EGR itself brake? I'm guessing your talking about the Modulator. As long as you can plug the lines, or get some barbed fittings to link them together *Maybe a T Fitting or something* Then its going to keep sucking air, causing your rough idle.

All you have to do is disconnect all the lines from the throttle body - there is a "p" "e" and an "r" I think. If you plug all three lines and the EGR vacuum supply it will get you through until you get the new part.

Personally, I hate EGR! I was getting 23-24MPG city (with the 5SFE) with my driving habits and full A/C - now I consistently get 25-26MPG with the EGR totally gone! I've saved all the parts since I plan to move to a more pollution-conscious state in a couple of years.

But my argument is this:

If having EGR is less fuel efficient in city driving (no effect on highway MPG by the way) then why have it? Plus, you'll get a little boost in power since you're not getting exhaust fumes injected into your motor during part-throttle...

Just a thought...You can test my statement by disconnecting all the vacuum lines and comparing city MPG

Mine is a 5SFE. The EGR Modulator's nipple is what broke (cheap brittle old plastic). Guess I'll plug it and see what she does. Appears to hold alright with epoxy....but I guess now I have a real EGR problem...code keeps coming up (DTC71).

I sprayed some Kroil Oil up in the EGR valve and worked the valve a bit by moving it up and down by hand to unstuck it. Didn't seem to do much.....

On a side note, I wouldn't be surprised it's full of carbon build-up. She has 340k miles on her. AMSOIL Power Foam makes it quite a bit better....still gets the code though. Probably have to take the whole system apart and clean the carbon out.

I'll try plug all the vac lines and see if she runs better. It has poor idling and bad acceleration under 2000 RPM.

I hear ya about this EGR. It's pollution control, not a performance item and at this point, it causes more problems than it's worth.
