VC gasket kits...

Pondering if i should get the

VC gasket + Sparkplug gaskets kit

or the

VC gasket + Sparkplug gaskets + Semicircular plugs ("half-moons") kit

For my gen 3, 2.2 liter

I will be prying of the half moons and resealing them (leaking), but just don't know if they should be reused or new.

How do you know if they need to be new? I've 211k miles on the engine...

BTW I've been trying to figure out what the function of the halfmoons are in an engine... why are they there?... it's not a moving part... why aren't the cylinder head just solid there instead?

The plugs are like $8/piece? I'd carefully pull them loose in the up direction so you don't crack off the ledge on the circular side. Clean off the old RTV and keep the debris from going into the cylinder head. A wire brush on the plugs make cleaning easier. Wipe the surfaces with alcohol so the RTV will stick better. Then use some Permatex Ultra Black or Ultra Copper (higher temp but softer).

I'd just get a Fel-Pro VC and spark plug tube seal kit. The plugs are there to cover up the cutouts needed for machining the cam journals. Yeah, looks dumb.

$18.26+shipping:

Hehe. Thanks for explaining that part, struck me as really weird, but now I understand it...
