Changing Differential fluid only with synthetic?

Ok one of the few things i was able to do myself on my old camry was drain and refill the transmission fluid. Now that i have a 97 4 cylinder with seperate differential I am considering having mechanic just change the differential fluid with the valvoline maxlifee ( i think it says its synthetic) , and maybe a week or two later i will get under car and drain and refill the transmission fluid.


OK so would having synthetic in differential and dyno in transmission cause any trouble? Is it ok to change differential only, if you are looking to drain and refill transmission within 3 weeks?

I wouldn't worry about it. At 68k miles, I changed out the old ATF with fresh Valvoline Dex/Merc on my Camry; took nearly 10 qts. As for the differential, I replaced it with Valvoline Maxlife ATF (with is a blend I believe) and never had a problem. It is fine to change out just the differential fluid and Maxlife may help the axle seal last longer.

Here's a tip: Remove the filler plug BEFORE the drian plug is removed. I seen and read a few problems with the filler plug jammed while all the fluid has drain out.

If you did ATF drain /fill, you can do the differential without any issues. Just follow the DIY here (i did mine couple months back). I used mobile1 atf (used online coupong from advanced auto parts and came aroung $5.50 per qt.

I use full synthetics everywhere and no issues on either of cars. you can also mix them with dino (it becomes a blend then), no probs.
