3rd Generation 1996 Camry 2.2 OBDI or OBDII?? Which is the best code scanner to buy?

I'm trying to figure out if my 1996 Camry 2.2 is a OBD I or OBD II type so I can buy the appropriate code scanner for it. Any suggections would be helpful from previous experiences.
Thanks!

OBDII. Check for a trapezoidal 16-pin connector underneath the steering wheel.

I recommend Scangauge. When you're done pulling codes, you can use it to track gas mileage and change your driving so that you use less gas.

By 1996 all are OBD-II. However, 1MZ that started in 94 are also OBD-II. Can't remember for sure but check under the steering wheel for behind the coil draw for the connector.

If you want to use one with a laptop then EBay has a $15 dongle shipped from Hong Kong. Other members use it but I haven't. Otherwise a CAN capable OBD-II scanner from Harbor Freight on sale should work fine. CAN (Controller Area Network developed by Bosch) allow it to be used with newer cars too.

All vehicles manufactured 1996 and later are classified as OBDII.

The best OBDII guage I can recommend is the UltraGuage...it will read trouble codes, track your fuel economy, engine temperature, RPMs, speed, distance, battery voltage, etc etc. and is it MUCH cheaper then the ScanGuage.

It is LED backlit, it can be mounted on your dash or windshield, it now can read Metric and English, which the SG cannot and the display is much larger.

You can read UP to 8 guages at once versus only 4 with the SG, plus you can set it to auto change the pages for you to read them all at a glance.

Also, unlike the SG, with the UG, all you do is plug the device into your OBDII port, switch the key to ON/RUN (you do not have to start the engine, as long as the battery is activated) and it will scan your vehicle for all guages that are compatible with UG.....UP to 75 guages are available with UG.

It is a better deal all around and is much cheaper. Only purchase the ScanGuage is you can afford it and if you want to connect several ScanGuages together at once.

I hope this helps!

Yes, the UltraGuage can reset the Check Engine Light and it will also read pending codes that may not be present at the moment...which is very interesting.

Congratulations on your purchase, you will not be sorry. UG is able to keep prices so low because they sell directly from their factory and only rely on word of mouth for advertising...so spread the word!

Make sure to read the operating manual for it on their website.
