P0500 Speed Sensor resolution GEN 4 2.2L
Just figured I'd post the resolution for my VSS Speed Sensor issues I have been having. I had a motor replaced last year, and recently developed some wacky speed sensor issues with CEL code P0500. My speedometer would drop to zero, and/or jump from 0 to 90 or more. Also, my car would go into neutral, or drop down a gear. I suspected the speed sensor, after scanning this forum for your recommendations (has bailed me out numerous times) so I bought a speed sensor on the web for $40. It didn't fix the problem.
I read back through the threads for P0500 and saw where bad wiring may cause this. I traced the wiring back and noticed that two of the main wiring 'cables' were laying on a big copper pipe at the back of my motor. I could easily see that the plastic shielding that surrounded the wires had been eaten through. I peel it back and see that I've got two wires that were cut in two.
When they put my motor in, they didn't tighted the motor mounts and, over time, the hot pipe ate its way through the shielding and through the wires. I spliced those wires together and its working great now.
I guess it was proabably my fault for living with the vibrating motor as long as i did. don't live with bad motor mounts!!! all that vibration will catch up with you somewhere!
Anyway, just wanted to post this just in case someone else had the same problem. Wish I had taken a picture to show you guys....not sure what that copper pipe is called, but IMO they should never have routed that cable the way they did, and especially shouldn't have left it lying against that hot pipe.
You guys have been a great help to me over the years. Anytime I have an issue with my car (2000 Camry LE 2.2L 171k) I know I can find the answer in here.
