Slow acceleration, Low RPM and very bad gas mileage.

Hey all. I am new to the forum and I was hoping someone might be able to give me a bit of advice on an issue I am having with my 1994 Camry 4 cyl.

I bought it a year ago and it has always had a strange idling problem and when the A/C was on the acceleration wasnt too great. But it drove fine until just recently. I was taking a drive about 100 miles away and decided to use the cruise control. The drive was fine til I noticed a strange squeeking/ticking noise. Its made a few strange noises before so I ignored it. After getting back in the car after about an hour the squeeking/ticking noise got worse and I realized the acceleration dropped drastically. The RPM;s will not go past 1000 now, i find myself putting in $10 of gas a day to only drive about 10 miles to work and it takes about 5 minutes to accelerate to 45 mpg. And it shifts hard, but im sure that could be a product of the acceleration issue.

I have no idea what is wrong. I checked/replaced spark plugs. Tranny fliud is clean and motor oil is fine.

What else should I try?

Any help is appreciated!

Check your fuel system, you could have a leak, pinched fuel line, or you might be running rich. Check your distributor cap and rotor button as well. Does it cut out all of the sudden like it's hitting the rev limiter or does it bog down and just not push past 1k?

I have checked the distributor cap and it looks fine. Im not quite sure what a rotor button is but my step father knows a bit about cars and I have the service manual at home so ill check that out as well.

When it idles it sometimes acts like it revs on its own, but its ony for a second or two at a time and it returns to normal. Usually when I drive down the road even during the time from 0 to 45 the RPM gauge stays less than 1k... actually it barely moves from 0.

Well you might have a couple problems, if your car is revving itself then you might want to clean your IAC. There is a very detailed thread on it in the sticky DIY section at the top of the page about cleaning it. Have you recently done any fuel system changes or maintenance? When was the last time you had your timing belt changed?

This is a basic vid of how to change your rotor button. Chances are it's never been done on your car, so it's good to do it anyways. The vid isn't on the Camry, but it does provide the basic info you'll need to do it.
