3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
so i am 16 and i have had my 95 camry for 6 months. My dad is a mechanic and we bought the car for 500 and it needed an engine. We bought a motor with 100k on it for $700 and put it in along with all new belts, oil pump, fuel filter, and water pump. Now i have around 1500 into in and could easily sell it for 2500 around here with all the new parts. The car is very clean and straight. It has no problems at all. It has been a great car and all, but, it is just too damn slow and gutless. i could get a mid 90's maxima for around 2000 with the 200hp rock solid 3.0 v6 and way more options and i could sell my camry for 2500. That would leave 500 extra for licence/registration and a new timing belt, water pump, and oil pump. Does anyone have any experience with a maxima compared to a camry?
This is a camry forum, go ask the maxima forums about which years/ etc to avoid.
There solid cars but their auto trannys arent as solid as the camry. Also if your camry is basically 100% ready to go its stupid to sell it. Youll buy a piece of junk for 2500$ and sell a perfectly good car. Also the 3.0 maxima isnt much more powerful then a v6 camry.
Its up to you man, I know when I was 16 I thought speed was cool. I outgrew that quickly....... Gas consumption will be much higher, but it'll also be high on a 4cylinder if your driving it like an idiot.

Your call. I'd ask why the new front end. $2500 is a lot for this old of a Maxima wiith prior body damage and rust, Besides, if the TB has not been changed and it breaks, the engine will be ruined, since the Timing Belt V-6s are interference motors. Good luck on whatever you decide to do.
I've owned both a Camry and a Maxima. I drove my Maxima for 11 years and 195K miles. I drove two Camrys '88 and '00 and have a driven cumulative distance of about 154K miles.
I'll admit Maxima was more fun to drive. It was a little more expensive to maintain, but very troublefree. I had to change 2 fuel injectors, but otherwise, mostly normal maintenance. The ride is firmer.
The Camry has been old faithful. Also very troublefree. It rides a lot nicer. I upgraded the tires/wheels to 16's which improved the handling, but something you just can change are things like the steering ratio and diameter of the steering wheel. It handled well, but with a slow steering, it just doesn't feel sporty.
With your Camry, you'll get many many more years of troublefree miles. Maximas are pretty good cars, but any old car can be a gamble.

I know the older maximas have a serious problem with rust in the radiator core support area. Any used maxima you buy be sure and check this area closely. I have found the maxima to be more expensive to maintain than a camry. I have a 95 maxima (daughter drives to college)and a 94 camry(I drive to work and such).Just replaced tie rods, MAF, IACV, knock sensor, oxygen sensor, plugs and tune up and valve cover gaskets on the maxima for about a grand. The camry only needed a new air filter. I prefer the camrys smoothness and reliability but the max is more peppy i suppose.
