3rd Generation Dash Light problems

Ok, so here is the problem. 1996 Camry. Last night, noticed I did not have gauge lights again...no biggie, checked the fuse, fuse was good. Today, replaced all 4 bulbs everything checked out, and worked...for 5 minutes...While putting the trim piece with the cig lighter the lights on the dash just went out. Now I have NO HVAC lights, and NO gauge illumination...arghhh...I have had the new radio in for a couple months now. The radio was sligthly loose, so I tried screwing back in place, well that was what caused the lights to go out, so I took the radio out, and looked around. I could not find any loose wires or anything...

This is frustrating as I just spent 10 dollars on new bulbs today...

Check the dash rheostat ... a twist-able dial on the dash panel ... controls gauge illumination.

Check 15A Tail fuse.

the dimmer switch may have dirty contacts. check the connector for looseness or corrosion and if you feel the need, test the dimmer per the FSM.

Well, the dimmer switch never did work since I got the car back in June, and when I put the new headunit, I did have to replace the fuse for the gauge/taillights. This time, it just happened out of the blue and the first thing I thought was check the fuse. The taillight warning lamp did not illuminate, but that was my first thought.

I replaced the bulbs yesterday, and they worked until I went to put the U shaped trim piece around the radio back on. Everytime I would put slight upward pressure on the head unit, the dash lights would go off until they would not come back on.

What kind of radio is it? Sounds like there is a wiring problem or something similar with it...you install it? You use an aftermarket harness too?

It is a JVC double DIN, and yes to both of your questions. I installed it at the beginning of July, and did not have a have a problem until Sunday. I checked the dimmer switch/dial and it does nothing to dim or brighten the lights. That however, has not worked since I got the car back in June. I re-checked the bulbs today, they are still good( purchased yesterday) and the weird thing is, the clock still dims when the head lights are turned on, and the glove compartment light comes on. The other thing is the head unit dims when the head lights are turned on, and now the SRS warning light is on constantly...

I found a link for a PDF of the wiring harness of a 1994 Camry, but it would not let me post the link, but it is called **********s. Where would I start looking on the wiring diagram? I called my local Toyota dealership, and am supposed to get a printout of the wiring diagram in a while...

... Suggest that you remove the radio completely, and see what problems/malfunctions are remaining ... with the radio out.

Your description sounds like there is a wire or two that is being jammed up against another wire, or the maybe metal chassis.

If everything returns to normal after you remove the radio, you can get some wire ties and some split loom and try to insulate or protect the wires at the rear of the radio ... if that is what is causing the problem.

Already tried that, to no avail...

Ok, so I attempted to fix it after I got the wiring diagram, a test light and a multimeter... I somehow made things much worse, the battery died, the needles on the gauge cluster do not work, and the turn signals indicators on the dash do not blink... And it currently will not start...

If ANYONE could please help me.

Also, somehow, the lights came back on briefly when I reinstalled the rheostat, and then almost immediately went off again...I tried the jumper trick earlier, but to no avail...

PLEASE, there HAS to be SOMEONE with a solution...

Ok, so an update, the alternator died last night, and now the Vehicle speed sensor is broken... Is all of this somehow interrelated? The gauge lights, gauges themselves, the HVAC lights, the alternator and the VSS all going out like this?
