Starting problem

I have a Camry 1993, 3L, automatic. Sometimes the car doesn't start unless I hit the steering-whee a few times. I remplaced the ignition switch but the problem didn't go away. Also some times the engine stops while idling. Please help.

When you turn the ignition key on, nothing happens at all until you hit the steering wheel? No starter motor ... right?

A guess ... the Park Neutral Position Switch ... which keeps the engine from being started while the transmission is in forward or reverse gear.

Next time this happens, you might try moving the gear selector back and forth a few times from park to neutral.

... Could also be a wiring issue ... short or frayed insulation.

Is your steering wheel locked? I know a couple people who couldn't figure out my car because you can't start the car unless the steering wheel isn't locked. Try slight turning the wheel and then starting the car. Or my gf's car will not start if the key is all the way in, but if it's slightly out it's fine. I don't know what hitting the wheel would change, but these are the few things I could think of.
