Help: engine light code 22 on 93 camry, water temp sensor?

Hello nation,

I need some help! My engine does not like to start after it has been sitting overnight or a few hours. It will take a couple of cranks before it will fire up, runs a little rough for a few seconds and then will run perfectly fine when its warm. After its warmed up, if I turn the engine off, it will start right back up no problems. It only gives me trouble when the car has been sitting out for awhile.

I am getting a check engine light code 22 which is the water temperature sensor circuit fault from what I looked up if I am correct.

I need to know what sensors I should check/replace and where they are. Thank you!

Which engine does your car have? The engine coolant temperature sensor, if that is what you are referring to, is usually under a green plastic connector. If you have the 4 cylinder 5SFE engine and you are standing in front of the car, there are 2 or 3 sensors on a port to the right of the cylinder head. The engine coolant temperature sensor is the one under the green plastic connector.

Thank you Mike. I think the problem is that green connector. I checked it out and it is not clipping into the sensor for some reason? I'm trying to push the green connector in but it is loose for some reason.

I put the new temp sensor in and it solved the check engine light. I am still having trouble with starting the car after it has been off for a couple hours. Any ideas? Thank you!
