more minor problems than other cars?

throttle body/IAC dirty leading to stalling, P0401 code, &for some- oil gelling. Do other cars or before&after 4th gen Camrys have these problems? I thought Toyotas were trouble-free. Also my car is unsafe with a floor mat so I removed it. (there was a recall on floor mats)

Camrys and Toyota pre 02-03ish are hands down some of the most reliable cars out there. The sludge problem isnt as huge as people think is it. 99.9998% of the time if the oil was changed every 4-5k nothing happened.

If you think cleaning the the throttle body and changing the oil is a problem buy a nice pair of walking shoes instead of a car.

The floor mat issue was on the gen 6 camry... But yeah toyota has taken a major downturn after 2001 for the camry, I wouldn't touch a 2.4l with a 15 foot pole.

5th gen camry 4cyl has random issues with loose head bolts leading to head gasket trouble
6th gen had LOTS of issues initially, like leaky VVTi oil lines, bad transmission/ECU programming, SUA issues (mats, brake pedals, no brake override in ECU programming, etc)
worth mentioning that both gen5&6 are interference engines, so if the timing gets by any chance screwed up that's it for the engine (gets damaged). on the other hand timing chains last pretty much the life of car.

3rd & 4th gen are pretty neat (4th gen calls for more frequent oil changes though due to lack of oil cooler). all cars require maintenance though, if you are not willing to do that then stick to mass transit and forget about cars.

TB cleaning and oil changes are maintenance not problems. The floor mats in the Gen 4 were a non issue as they were never accused of having the acceleration thing. And nothing was ever really proven about that on other gen's, except some people let the floor mat slide forward and bunch up beneath the throttle. But I thought there was a little clip like thing on the floor that fits into a hole in the mat to keep it from sliding. So I guess those people didn't know what it was there for. So I agree with carsrus just get a good pair of shoes, although you will probably whine about having more shoe lace knotting and/or breaking problems than other shoes.
