PO773/Lock Up Solenoid

I'm hoping to remedy a problem. 1997 Camry V6 with the PO773 fault code. I have been throughout this forum as well as the net to determine a course of action. I have read that this solenoid is externally accessed behind the neutral safety switch which for me does not exist at that location. (different tranny?) I have also read that the solenoid is located internally, can anyone confirm this. There is a connector to the right of the NSS, I have read this as being identified as the SL solenoid however, there seems to be too many wires within the connector. I have sourced the replacement and it shows just two wires. I have located a two wire plug (red and green) on the top of the trans housing just to the right of the starter looking straight down, could this be it since it is not behind the NSS connector. Would like to know if anyone has been down this road and what course of action taken to resolve. I know this sounds like a lot but, I'm hoping someone else has concluded these same circumstances.
Thanks very much for your help.
Best Regards,
Paul

P0773 code indicates problem with the SL solenoid ... or its wiring.

Before you do anything at all, it might be helpful to locate the
pink wire with a blue stripe that goes into the transmission pan. This is the SL solenoid wire. See if you can find anything that is obviously wrong ... frayed insulation, bare wire, rubbing points, anything out of the ordinary.

One diagram shows that the SL wire as pink, another shows it as pink with a blue stripe ... You should be able to find it someplace around the transmission pan.

There is nothing in the literature to indicate any connection to the NSS for this problem.

If you can get the factory service manual, take a look at p. DI-419 ... 422. ... Gen 4 Diagnostics Section.

First diagnostic test:
It looks like you can disconnect one of the harness connectors to the ECM and measure resistance between terminal SL of the ECM harness, and chassis ground .... You should measure 11-15 ohms.

Second diagnostic test:
Next test is wire harness between SL terminal of ECM and connector on SL terminal of transmission connector. ... No shorts or open circuit.

Final test is to remove transmission pan, physically remove solenoid SL, and measure the resistance between Solenoid terminal and solenoid body. You should measure 11-15 ohms.

The wire for solenoid SL that goes into the transmission pan is shown on the wiring diagram as pink with a blue stripe. Inside the pan, the wire for the SL solenoid changes to solid yellow.

... Suggest looking at the FSM diagnostic section for details.

There seems to be some difference between engine immobilizer and non engine immobilizer .... Do you have non-engine immobilizer, or engine immobilizer?

DC,
Thanks for your response. I do have engine immobilizer. You are right to suggest obtaining a FSM. I'm sure I have read posts that were not applicable to my situation and factored them in. The NSS ref. was an externally accessed SL solenoid located directly behind the NSS connector but, for a different tranny, year, application or something else that doesn't apply to me. I will identify the wires as described and follow the diag. proc. and get this resolved. Thanks again for your input.
Best Regards,
Paul

If you look at the wiring diagram, it looks like there are actually 4 solenoids that reside within the transmission. However, only one is designated as SL. The SL solenoid is grounded to the chassis, so it should only have one wire going to it. ... That is, assuming I am looking at the correct transmission for your car.
... let us know how it's going ...

Awhile back I posted concerning this code, and also searched the formum. I checked resistance between the ECU connectot and ground (through the solenoid) and it was good. I also applied 12 volts and confirmed clicking. Although this problem seems very common, there does not seem to be any common solution. The search sort of suggested I should just service the transmssion with a new filter and fluid, so I did (cheap). BELIEVE IT OR NOT THE CODE WENT AWAY!
