Question re: Alarms

After completely having the car fixed up cosmetically... and being less than three hours from Tijuana, Mexico now I'm worried this '93 is going to end up there.. I'm in L.A. and it's a straight shot on the fwy. It's a T.J. dream car.. only 110K mi. on it and clean as hell.

So, do I try and track down this mechanic and have a kill switch installed or should I pay my alarm guy $200 for this system?

Anyone familiar with Code Alarm. My last system was Viper I think?

The car:

A kill switch is as effective as any alarm. People simply ignore alarms when they go off anymore... and a kill switch will stop them from driving off in it.

Agreed. Think back to the last time you were at walmart and heard an alarm go off in the parking lot. What did you think?
1) Someone's car is getting jacked! I should intervene!
2) God that's annoying they should really turn that off.

I'm gonna go ahead and guess you picked number 2. I would do the same.

Alarms are only efficient if they go off right outside your house, as you'll know to go outside and investigate. I would get an alarm but also a kill switch mounted somewhere secret.

Yes, so here is the next question.. where is the best place to hide it? Also what is the best type of physical switch to use.
A flat rocker.... what?
I once saw a set up where you had to push the cigarette lighter in first.... then turn the key. Quite ingenious if I do say so myself.

  • Parking light and trunk outputs
  • Negative door lock / unlock outputs
  • Hi-Jack mode

An alarm does have more features, but the kill switch will keep your car from being stolen.

You have to remember to set either one though if you want them to be effective.

How true! Personally, I agree with Zembonez and only a kill switch is necessary. Even if you retain an alarm system, add the kill switch.

I saw the cig lighter switch,...it actually works by turning the key to the 'run' position,..then pushing in the lighter to engage the starter. It was cool! BUT,....a seasoned car theif has the potential to find that.
Zem is right on the money,....I'd do both,.....your car is well worth it. I'd hate suggest where to put the kill switch cause some ratbag might see it on here and tip him off. They have the internet in Mexico too!!! Public Forum,........

I would just go for a good kill switch. Ive seen them on the floor as a push down setup, very, very hard for someone to figure it out.

Alarms are worthless nowadays other then keyless entry.....

A good hint is to put in on the fuel pump, the thief will be able to crank it but it just wont start/ run for only a few seconds. If the car flat out wont crank a seasoned thief will know you have a starter kill.

Its not a rocker switch. Its a push switch, almost like some lamps. Sort of like this, http://www.google.com/products/catal...ed=0CGwQ8gIwBA

They make heavy duty ones, and if you can paint is gray/ whatever your carpet is and no one will see it. If you put it in an awkward spot it will be very hard to find by a thief.

Its awesome b/c you can just use your foot and no weird bending over or reaching underneath to set the switch.

My dad's 1989 Ford E350 had a floor mounted push button for the high beam switch. Something like that would be perfect.

Yes, that kind of looks like a good idea. I remember when we turned our hi beams on with the floor button...

...my mechanic said this place around the corner from me is charging around 70$ to install an alarm system. I told him it has to be J-U-N-K!
The company that I've used before charges 200$ for an AudioVox Code Alarm unit CA1051

It's their entry level unit, anyone know anything about Code Alarm?

http://www.audiovoxproducts.com/code...ty/?sku=CA1051

I see how much these good systems are going or on eBay w/out install... this one is just garbage I'm sure. Dad always said, 'you get what you pay for'.
