Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hi everyone this is my first post here. Quick question, I recently got off of ebay a $10 key fob for my grandmas car but when i tried to program it nothing would work. She never had a remote for it but i just figured the po didnt give it bc I know there is a remote available for that year. Now the model is ether a ce or le but I think its a ce. I then started to think is it only the upper models that had the keyless entry? If so could you add it to the lower models without much expense? I do all my work on my vehicles so swapping in modules or splicing isnt a problem for me.. I own all American vehicles so im not up on all the toyota models. Thanks Everyone!!!
If your car has a security system, it will have a little square box that says security somewhere in the cabin. looks similar to this image below
You can also look underneath the drivers seat for the alarm module, look behind the drivers kick panel, etc.. for the RS3000 module which would be the factory alarm system:
If neither of these are installed. There is no factory alarm system installed in the vehicle.
Your best bet would be to go to a salvage yard and try to find a vehicle with a factory alarm system, and remove the entire wiring harness, RS3000 module, and Security light. Once you get that, its fairly simple to install
Just so you know, factory alarm systems are not installed on every single camry. Its an option that you can purchase. Just like Power windows, rear disc brakes, aluminum rims, sun-roof, etc.. all optional equipment.
Thanks for all the info! Im pretty sure it doesnt have the factory alarm then because I dont recall ever seeing the security light. Now you said the warning harness would have to be replaced, which harness are we talking about? I mean where does it plug in? The one end would go up to the dash where the light is im guessing then the other end plugs into the bcm? Thanks again for all the help!!
Nah, you dont replace any harnesses in your own car.
What your doing is removing the harness that connects to the alarm module and the light, because your car doesnt have it. Then you just need to splice into a few wires
I think I understand you now. So as of right now the connectors for the alarm module/light are on the harness for my car but there just isnt anything plugged into them. Am I right? Thanks again!! Oh also is there any engine immobilizer built into that module that im gona run into trouble with?
Thanks for this. I've got a 97 LE and wondered if the Security light meant I had an alarm. Now I'll do some scouting for the module.
If I find my car is equipped with the alarm, does that automatically mean it was also equipped for keyless entry? I'm the 5th owner, so I didn't get any fob (or the original keys, for that matter). I'd love to source a fob on eBay, etc., but is that the only way I can tell if it's keyless entry?

If you find the module, then yes.. more than likely it was equipped with a factory alarm system which inlcuded keyless entry.
If you want to confirm any options that were equipped with your car, simply call your local Toyota Parts department and give them your VIN and they will let you know what options went with your ride
get a used matching key fob from ebay, usually around $30ish. then follow the manual instructions on programming it into the alarm ECU (so it learns it belongs to it).
that's how I "upgraded" my both cars to be alarm equipped and keyless entry ready to use (neither of private sellers realized it was all in there ready to use and waiting LOL!).

Just wanted to update that I finally tested the unit, and everything lit up okay, so a call to a dealer verified that I had a dealer-installed unit (not factory-installed, uses a different fob clicker). More research showed that I needed the egg-shaped 2-button in black for my 97 (not grey, that's 98 and up).
A used $38 fob on eBay did the trick, and now I've "upgraded" mine, too, to keyless entry and a working alarm I didn't know I already had! Programming it myself was a cinch, considering the dealer wanted to charge $54 to program and $165 for a brand-new fob.
